Carol's Story

Being born and raised in Ballard, thought I'd never leave, but because of job relocation, moved to the Olympic Peninsula (Sequim) in 1975. It took about a year and a half to adjust, but have found that this is where I belong. After working for the Sequim School District District for some 28 years, I retired and am now activily involved with the Sequim Guild of Seattle Children's Hospital. The 80+ members actually voted me in as president which I was so grateful as my love for kids is the most important thing in my life. I was only able to give birth to one child (John Thor), but after that, I have been blessed with three grandchildren and three great grandchildren. I lost my first husband John to Viet Nam and my second husband Bill in 1983 to a severe medical pcondition. Guess I feel that I am "bad news" when it comes to men, and maybe that is why I have become so independent and have not even thought about taking a chance on love again. I have lots of friends and enjoy sharing stories, coffee, and traveling. I keep busy with gardening, my wonderful cats, crafts, reading and of course my favorite ..... making the difference in the lives of children. Life is Good ..... God is Good ..... July, 2012 Dear Fellow 1962 Classmates, Mike H. asked me to give you an update on the last ten years since we got together for our 40th class reunion. Lots of things have happened in my life since 2002 …… some very positive and some not so good at all. After working for 28+ years at the Sequim School District, I retired in the fall of 2006. After working for so many years, I was really afraid of retirement …… as I am not one who plays golf, or sits around reading books and/or watching TV. Let me start off with the positive: •I still live in the most beautiful part of Washington State. A little town called Sequim located in the rain shadow just north of the Olympic Mountain range. We only get an average of 13” of rain a year. For many years, I lived on a golf course, which was wonderful with a swimming pool, tennis courts and all the other amenities for a family, but in 2002, I decided to downsize and now I live in a smaller home on one acre with an unobstructed view of the Olympic Mountains. •Because of our special teacher, Marion Candee, I am able to pursue one of my greatest pleasures ….. design/display. I have now for some time been able to go into people’s homes and using what they already have redesign/replace/reposition in the way of furniture, etc. and make them happy, My business n...Expand for more
ame is “My Other Job.” I have also done several outside landscaping projects of which I am so very pleased. •I have three grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. John Robert has two children. Jonathan is 2 and Mikenna is 1. What a handful! John Robert is an excellent cabinet maker and works and lives in Port Angeles just 15 miles west of Sequim. Christy is an RN and has twins. Lucy & Ryan age 4 are the love of my life. I see them often as they also live in Sequim. Jake (age 20) is still feeling his oats, but manages to hold down a full time job at the local Italian restaurant. He is doing a good job and manages to get lots of tips. •When I retired, I joined the Sequim Guild of Seattle Children’s Hospital. This was and still is one of the most wonderful things I have ever done. Remember JOG? Well, this is the adult version. Our guild (the Sequim Guild) continues to have fund raisers that make money for uncompensated care for Seattle Children’s Hospital. Guild Members elected me president 3 years ago and in that time, we have raised between $50,000. and $75,000. Annually for uncompensated care. I don’t want to brag, but I am so very grateful for being a member of this wonderful group of women. •I really like to travel and because of my “Time Share” buddies (Gwen, Rita and Joanne) and Alaska Airline VISA mileage plan, have been able to take trips all over the US, including Reno, Las Vegas, Branson, MO, Miami, Phoenix, & Sedona, AZ., On my annual trip to PV Mexico, I met and adopted a lovely family who’s son, Little Ruben had a brain tumor. You can GOOGLE “Project Ruben” (Sequim Gazette) for details. Bottom line: This 5 year old boy had a tumor over his left eye. The tumor, the size of a large baked potato …. I generated a campaign to help Little Ruben. He had surgery. It was a success. He can see. It was paid for as a result of efforts of the Sequim Community. I am so happy and so proud. When I met with the doctors last October, they said it was because of me and my friends, that Little Ruben is alive. I communicate on a weekly basis with Little Ruben and his family ….. what a blessing this family has been to me. God is good. This is the negative: •My only son John Thor passed away on March 8, 2012. I am still so very sad. I have had too many losses in my life. ……. I am so fortunate that I have GOD in my life. I pray every morning and again at each sunset that “HIS WILL” will be done, not mine.”
