Carol's Story
Carol is from Summertown, Tennessee. Carol's schools include Bremen High School. Oak Forest Hospital School of Nursing. Carol works at North American Registry of Midwives, the national certification agency for credentialing Certified Professional Midwives.
Carol Nelson LM, CPM-TN, AASM is a Certified Professional Midwife.
She lives with Don Nelson, her husband of 48 years. She is the mother of four children, three of which were born at home, and grandmother of 8, all of which were born at home, with Carol in attendance. Five great grand children
Carol Nelson, is a Certified Professional Midwife, social activist, researcher and preceptor. She has been actively involved on the Board of Directors of several Non-Profits and in Public Health since 1968. She has an active midwifery practice at the Farm Midwifery Center, in Summertown, a rural area of southern Tennessee, with her five midwife partners. They provide prenatal, labor and delivery and postpartum care to many rural underserved women including the Old Order Amish Community. She has been delivering babies for over 50 years. She has been attending out of hospital births since 1972.
She has been actively involved with midwifery politics since 1977. She received her Certified Professional Midwife credential (CPM) in 1995 was actively involved in the North American Registry of Midwives (NARM) She has been on the NARM Board serving as the Treasurer since 1997 and Director of Applications since 2003.

f the APHA position paper, Safe Motherhood in the United States: Reducing Maternal Mortality and Morbidity. This was adopted in 2003, by APHA. She is co-author of the APHA position paper, Maternal Health as a Human Right: Strategies for Improving Maternal Health Outcomes and Care a policy adopted in 2011 by APHA. She is currently active in the Maternal Child Health Section of APHA, representing the profession of Midwifery and Midwifery Educators. She is co-chair of the Innovations in Maternity Health Services Committee of the Maternal Child Health Section of APHA. This is the committee within APHA that holds the space for ânormal birthâ. She is currently serving on the APHA Governing Council as a representative for the Maternal Child Section. She has been a review editor for the Maternal and Child Health Journal, a peer reviewed journal, since 2002. She was on the Tennessee Council of Certified Professional Midwives from 2000 to 2015 She works as a pro-bono lobbyist for the Tennessee Midwives Association in their legislative efforts.
Carol has been published in many journals and magazines and has presented at many workshops and conferences. She also attends conferences and is responsible for the Educational exhibit booth production and staffing promoting the profession of midwifery, nationally and internationally.
Since 1997 she has been the Midwives Alliance of North America (MANA) public Education and Advocacy chair helping to promote the profession of midwifery and move midwifery forward in the United States.
Fall 2016, Carol iopened the College of Traditional Midwifery, a 3 year direct-entry midwifery program that awards an Associate Degree in Applied Midwifery Science. Carol is President of the College.
