Carol's Story

I'm a FL baby, who lived on & in the water on FL's Panhandle. My family moved to Macon, GA when I was 12. (Land locked. ugg) Macon became our home. I went to McKibben Lane Elementary School and then Miller Jr.. After Miller Junior, I was bussed over to Northeast where I worked on the School Newspaper and was the Editor of the literary Magazine, Salmagundi. After I graduated from Northeast High School. I went to Flagler College (student Body 500) in St. Augustine. Loved being back near the ocean, and loved the College. But I wanted to study Biology and it became nessesary to leave. I went to UGA (Go Dogs!!). after a year, I switched majors from Biology to Zoology. Couldn't decide what to do, so I dropped out for a while and worked at Athens General Hospital and absolutely loved it. After the quarter off, I decided to work on a BSRN. With my strong back ground in Biology I only needed one subject befor leaving for Augusta: 2 consecutive classes of Human Anatomy. But, my plans changed again. (backflash). When I went to UGA as a Sophmore, I moved into O-House a private co-ed dorm. Loved it! The first wk we had a hall meeting where I met a guy who went to the same High School as I did; but we never knew each other (He's older). lol Another reason we did not know each other is that at that time public Schools in Macon were segregated by sex. The girls went to one school and the boys school was accross the street. Our High School Diplomas have the same school name, but we really were in different buildings. Maybe that is why we both chose a (then privately owned) Co-ed dorm, Oglethorpe House. Living right down the hall, we did allmost everything together for four years. sta; he was leaving to work in Atlanta. We decided to get married then. I thought I would just finish my degree at GA Baptist afterwards. When I got to Atlanta, I found their program was 3 years, not two like in Augusta. I could not decide to go 3 more yrs for a 4 year degree after having completted 4 years at the University of GA. So I worked for a while, but quite soon when our first child, Melissa was born I quit to stay home with her. when she was 3 weeks old they transferred Alan to Greenville, SC. We lived there about a year and Alan's parents needed him to come back to Macon and run their business. Pretty soon our second child,David was born. I stayed home with the children and did a lot of charitable work. When David went into the first grade at Stratford Academy, Alan's parents asked me to open a second store on Riverside Dr. Knowing nothing about retail, I opened the store and ran it for about 12 years. The Linen Warehouse was quite a challenge. I had to learn the business from the bottom up. We helped customers decorate their homes. But, 2 big box stores were coming to Macon (Linens & Things and Bed Bath and Beyond), and we could forsee the economic times were going to be bad. Alan and I decided to retire, and the two stores were shut down. We have been able to travel a little. Our favorite sight seeing trip was Israel. But now most of our traveling is to see Our daughter and her 2 children in DC. They are precious and we love spending time with them. We also love to travel to the Ocean. Alan and I both love to dive, collect shells, etc.. I love traveling back to where my heart and soul still lies, the Ocean. We are still in Macon, GA, living in the same house for more than 15 years.
