Carol's Story

I stood at the bus stop in Northwood in September, 1965, frightened and alone, going to the first public school of my life. Having come from a Catholic girl's high school, I was to finish the last 2 years at Roslyn High. My first encounter was the brilliant Jeff Bloom, who was kind and accepting of this provincial and not-at-all "with it" young girl. That first day was difficult, but two people made it bearable: Barbara Albrecht and Kathy Altman...I made many friends over the next two years, including Stefanie Lichtman, nee Grossman with whom I'm still in touch. After leaving Ithaca College after my second year in 1968 (I was no great student!) majoring in Music, I went to secretarial school and thereafter got a job at CBS in 1969. It took 36 years of climbing, but I retired in 2005 as Senior Vice President/Program Practices for both CBS and (at the time) UPN Television Networks. I authored the CBS Program Standards, which even today, is the seminal document which dictates the standards by which program content is evaluated on the Network. I was involved in congressional hearings, special interest group interactions, film and animation task forces, and other industry activities and organizations. I wrote articles for the Anderson School of Business at UCLA and lectured graduate students there on "what they don't teach you in the classroom" about business practices. Since I chose to work behind the camera and under the radar, much of my work in policy is in articles, speeches and the congressional record, having authored testimony for "The Suits" who testified before House and Senate committees. Policy I developed was instrumental in stemming the intrusion of congress into freedom of speech issues in television content and in defending content to which certain senators, e.g, the late Paul Simon, took grave exception. All in all, not too bad for a drop-out who had more faith in herself than in a sheepskin. During all thi...Expand for more
s, I found time to sing professionally in New York at The Improv and The Comedy Store, and after I moved to LA in '79, at a cabaret in West Hollywood called The Gardenia. Chose not to marry, plowing all my time and effort into my profession which paid dividends in terms of rising through the ranks and earning the respect of my peers in the industry as well as CBS's internal senior management. Always pretty insecure, I managed to stay a-political in a frenzied political corporate environment, which also stood me in good stead as someone whose word one could take to the bank. The downside, of course, was that promotions were few and far between because of my fierce independence and refusal to "go along to get along." 60 MINUTES once wanted to do a piece on me and on Program Practices, the policy arm of the Network, but management nixed it because they knew I'd speak my mind! Got to go to wonderful events like the Kennedy Center Honors, Emmy's, Grammy's, Tony's, US Tennis Open, and countless others. I did interviews for The Wall Street Journal, New York Times Magazine, Boston Globe, Philadelphia Inquirer, Atlanta Constitution, and myriad other publications. Seems people were quite intersted in "sex and violence" and how content labeled as "true stories" were evaluated. Too much else to tell here, but it was a fabulous career and a great run. I took with me, invaluable lessons, great friends, amazing experiences and indelible memories. Also earned an Emmy for lifetime achievement when I retired in 2005. What an honor for a kid from Queens and Roslyn, NY! Not as prestigious as Janet Maslin, mind you, but she is a genius! Now I'm living the good life in Palm Desert, California, an extremely civilized and incomparably beautiful environment and aside from a few health issues, am ever grateful for the path I took and the fact that "I did it My Way"! Best to all of you, and hope to hear soon from anyone who might remember me.
