Carole's Story

I have lived all of my life in either Chicago or Miami, and like Miami a whole lot better. This doesn't mean that I don't have fond memories of my family and friends from the south side of Chicago. I remember my years at St. Bride's School, Loretto Academy, South Shore High School, and De Paul University. I could never forget my fellow faculty members and former English students at Chicago Vocational High School, where I taught for eleven years and sponsored the National Honor Society and the yearbook. Some of my favorite memories involve my wonderful yearbook staff and their accomplishments. Other memories include swimming at Rainbow Beach, working for four years at South Shore Library after school and all day during the summers, going with friends on Saturdays to the Museum of Science and Industry to try to meet the museum guards (who were college students), going to Joe's Pizza, the Patio Restaurant, Peter Pan(where all I could afford was an order of french fries), and Cunis's for ice cream. I remember when Tom was the "really cute" lifeguard who scandalized the head librarian where I worked by coming in to see me in his swimsuit on his dinner break from Rainbow Beach. Also, I think back to Bryn Mar Bowling Alley, where I spent many hours hanging out, hoping to run in to Tom and where I tried to fit in with his cool friends! I remember all the "Otis Rangers" who worked with Tom. Then there was Jackson Park Harbor where he kept the "Rita Lee", Tom's first boat, and later "Carrot Top", our first boat as a couple, was docked as well. My lif...Expand for more
elong love of boating (and Tom)began in Chicago. Tom and I were married in Chicago on December 31, 1965!!! NEW YEAR'S EVE!!! Later during several vacations in Miami, we developed a love of scuba diving, the Atlantic Ocean, palm trees, and everything tropical. It made sense to move permanently to Miami - so we did in 1976. Since that time, Tom started his own business, Miami Diver, in our home. We are commercial divers, servicing cruise ships and other large vessels. Next we rented a small warehouse; then we bought a small warehouse; finally we bought a large warehouse with several offices. Business is booming. As part of his work, we were fortunate to see the world and make money during the summers. While his business was taking off, I was employed as a teacher of high school Language Arts at Miami Central HS from 1976 through 2004, when I retired. During these years we owned several yachts and/or workboats and our favorite recreation was fishing and diving. Memories of my favorite places in Miami are of the old Castaways dock, the charter boats, the drift boats, Sandy Shores Motel, the Newport Pub restaurant with its great prime rib, and fishing trips to Key West and the Bahamas. We are now contemplating another move to either Mexico or the Bahamas, because Miami is becoming quite overcrowded. Too many developers are building huge developments, which ruin the seashore and bring people flocking to Miami. We're getting claustrophobia here and our goal is to live along the water and to tie up our boat at our back yard dock.
