Carolina's Story
Life
Up todate
Live in Soledad, CA work at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital as a Registered Nurse. Love my field of work, every day is a different challenge and unique adventure. Never knowing what will become of our busy day with our patients. Life at home I have five children, Katrina, Daniel, David (twins), Natalie and Anthony. Anthony is our great nephew who we won legal guardianship when he was 9 months. He is now going on 5. Our life is pretty busy, but I wouldn't change it for the world. My kids are so great and I am very proud of them all!!
Life as a teenager - 1977 - 81
I moved to San Diego in '79 started the 11th Grade as a new student at San Diego High School. I must say I was a bit nervous because it was hard being a chola and going to a "new" school especially in another city. Didn't know if I was going to be accepted or not. I was given looks a few times. Heck, some of the ones that gave me looks turned out to be good friends. I hung around with different girls from different neighborhood. I joined "Thee Casualettes," a social club, some of the girls in the club from school were Liliana Garcia, Martha Hill, Irene and Teresa Jaime Lolly, Rosie Magana. Believe it or not, we even came out in "Low Rider Magazine" and Q-Vo Magazine" when they were "good" magazines with stories from different neighborhoods. Graduated from High School in 1981, married, divorced and remarried after going back to college and graduating from Imperial Valley College in El Centro, CA. Graduating with a nursing degree in 1995.
Workplace
I've been working as a Registered Nurse since '95. I really enjoy working in a place where I help others. It emotionally satisfying to know that I helped someone get better, or saved a life. ...Expand for more
I've held several titles since '95, from Staff member to Charge Nurse to Clinical Coordinator. Becoming an RN has really given me the satisfaction that I had fulfilled my career life. My next step is to get my Bachelors Degree in Nursing and then my Masters Degree.
Talk with someone who can relate what I'm talking about. It mostly an older sister I have who also is an RN. This same sister is my inspiration of giving me the courage of achieving my nursing career. She always believed in me and kept by my side when times were hard in the nursing classes. Thanks to her I now have a very satisfying career and enjoy working with different people.
To be very patient with my kids. Especially the teenage years. My gosh what I must've put my mom through when "I" was a teenager!!
If I won $100 million, I'd give 10 million of it to each of my kids in a savings account until they reach the age of 21, then spend the rest on paying off bills, going on exotic vacations and achieving my goal on getting my Masters in Nursing. Therefore, I can teach in the nursing field.
Again, working in the medical field. I work with patients who have kidney failure and I do my best working withe the patient and family members enjoying the rest the patients borrowed time with their loved one while the patient is on dialysis (borrowed time).
My first job was at Jack in the Box, where I got paid $2.10/hr to work as cashier. What I remember most about is having fun with my friends who also worked with me at Jack in the Box. Goofing off when the boss was away. Giving away free food to all my friends and family who would come and visit me. Meeting new people. Although I only worked there for one month in the summer of '79 because we moved to San Diego.
