Caroline's Story

Life I miss the gold old days of the 70's! Jethro Tull, CSN&Y, Chicago, the Stones, Joni Mitchell, the Moodies! I am living in gorgeous Ouray, Colorado. I own a bookstore - Buckskin Booksellers which I purchased in November 2001. It is located in the historic Beaumont Hotel which has been beautifully restored and opened for business in 2002. I used to work in local government: I was the City Treasurer in Ouray, and then was Finance Manager for Montrose County Department of Health & Human Services. My husband is currently a city councilman and mayor pro-tem. I am on my third (and last) marriage and have three college degrees (geology, math ed, & accounting). I have one stepson, Ian, and two cats. Come see us in Ouray - my husband Robert Stoufer used to have The Sandman Shop, but we closed it at the end of 2006 due to my cancer. He now has a website business for Colorado minerals and is developing a website for Buckskin Booksellers which should be up and running soon. Since high school I have lived in Alaska, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and back to Texas three times (Abilene-briefly, Houston, and Ft. Worth). I have worked in the oil busines and mining, education, restaurants, public accounting, local government, banking, and now retail. For those of you who knew my older sisters, Suzie remarried in 2002 a physicist named Al. Diane retired in 2005 from American Airlines. My parents have both passed away. Suzie and Al live in Prescott, Arizona and currently Diane lives with them, too. They're not polygamists. They're definitely not Mormons. But we do watch Big Love on HBO> In October 2005, I was diagnosed with cancer of the liver bile ducts also called cholangiocarcinoma. I had a tumor the size of an orange in my liver. I had surgery to remove the tumor, along with half my liver, in late November 2005 and recovered nicely. During surgery, they found cancer in one of nine lymph nodes sampled which meant I'd probably have a recurrence...Expand for more
and I did. I have about 12 tumors in my liver, but we've managed to slow the growth down with chemotherapy. I did try some alternative methods. I took a lot of vitamin C which I think made my tumors grow faster. I did a clinical trial for Sorafenib, a chemo that works well on renal (kidney) cancer, but it didn't work for me or any other cancer patients that I correspond with that were on the same trial. I started chemo in May 2006, and I'm still in this world. The cancer metastisized to my left hip bone in September 2006, and I had radiation for two weeks in November. Suzie took us all to see the Beatles Cirque de Soleil Show for my birthday later that month which was so much fun. The CD of the show is great. A lot of the alternative tracks come from the Beatles Anthology album series. I'm so glad George Martin (their producer and the "fifth" Beatle in my opinion) is still alive and was able to do this project with his son. The Las Vegas show is good, but expensive, but the soundtrack is far out, man. I had to go off chemo during the month of November which allowed two of tumors to grow a little bit at my Januaray 2007 scan. I was really tired and fatigued in December 2006 - February 2007. I had a bone scan in February which came back clear, but I told the radiologist I had a lot of pain in my left thigh. I had an MRI in late February which showed I had developed a rare condition called radiation myositis which was caused by one of my chemo drugs, Gemzar or gemcitabine. This is a condition where the chemo drug induces a recall of radiation side effects, whether you had the side effect during radiation or not. Mine is a severe pain in my left thigh. So they put me on steroids and I've had lots of energy, and in fact got a bit manic due to some drug interactions, but we've gotten all that straightened out. I have an oldies show on the local low-power radio station, KURA, on Sunday afternoons. I also have a blog-search by Caroline's Cancer Diary.
