Caroline's Story
Life
Graduated U-Michigan in 1990 with a degree in French and moved to Chicago, where I've lived ever since. Married with 2 boys, Jack (born 1998) and Alex (born 2000). I've been working at Goldman, Sachs & Co. (investment bank / brokerage house) since 1991, and I am a Vice President. I trade stocks for institutional investors--like mutual fund companies or hedge funds--for a living. My husband does the same thing that I do, except he is a partner at William Blair & Co. We designed and built our house in 1999, which is in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of the city. We are a mile and a half from the lake, 2 miles south of Wrigley Field (go Cubs!) and about 3 miles from downtown, so yes, we actually live in the city. I head back to the Detroit area pretty often to see my family -- parents in Rochester, sister in Rochester Hills -- though haven't been to Warren since the 10-year reunion. We are old!

Workplace
I am one of the few people I know who has had the same job at the same firm for 14 years, and that includes my "Harvard MBA" brother! I have managed to find a career that suits me quite well--I trade stocks for large clients like mutual fund companies (Janus, Fidelity, American Century, etc) or hedge funds, which are private partnerships for wealthy investors. While a French degree certainly didn't set me up for it, my job entails a lot more interpersonal skills than you would imagine, and believe it or not trading is not that difficult once someone teaches you the ins and outs. Though the industry is fairly male-dominated, my Firm has been generous in maternity leave (4 months for each son) and my colleagues have become like my brothers (except my husband, who also does what I do!). Other than the hours -- in the office at 6 am -- I feel fortunate every day that I get to do what I do.
