Carolyn's Story

Life I have had a great life. Not many exciting things have happened, but I have gotten to travel to some foreign countries, which was most interesting. I have two wonderful daughters and 2 grand-children. They keep me busy going to sporting and school events. I love to travel and I read an awful lot. My hobbies are crochet and cross-stitch, but I never get to do as much as I would like. My children, grand-children and husband are the love of my life. I love spending time with family and friends and having parties. I discovered a new hobby a few years ago, working on my family tree. It is great fun and a lot of work too. I have found some interesting apples on the tree. I also love to cook and enjoy all the compliments I receive when all the food is consumed. I have 3 dogs and they were rescued from bad situations. They are a joy to have. When I retire I hope to do some volunteer work. I also hope to spend some time in Colorado my favorite vacation spot. Hopefully that will be 2-5 years from now. School When I was growing up I atteneded several elementery schools. My first school was Wilkinson Elementery, which is no longer in existence. I went to first and part of second grade in this small country school. We had 3 classrooms and 1 teacher for 3 grades. So I had the same teacher for first and part of second grade. I moved to Ft. Worth and enrolled in R Vickery Elementery. I finished second grade and third grade there. My second grade teachers name was Mrs. Smith and third grade was Mrs Izzard. In fourth grade I went to Carroll Peak Elementery and I am not sure if that school exist anymore. My teacher was Miss Driver, and she married the following summer, but I do not recall her married name. Then in fifth grade I went back to R Vickery and I don't recall my teachers name. In sixth grade my parents bought a house in east Ft Worth and I went to Eastland Elementery. My dad started to work in the oil fields and we moved to Canadian for a short time and I went to school there, but I do not remember the name of the school or the teacher. Then we came back to Ft Worth and I finished my sixth grade year at Eastland, my teachers name was Mrs Wren and I remember her husband worked for Acme brick. Then I went to Forest Oak Jr High for 2 years, then we moved to Hurst and I went to L D Bell from ninth grade to part of my senior year. We moved to Lake Worth and I went to school there a few weeks and then we moved to Ft Worth and I attended Polly High School for the remainder of the yea...Expand for more
r. Needless to say I moved around so much that it was hard to make and keep friends. But I did manage to hang onto a few friendships. I was so shy in school that I really can't think of any funny or crazy school memories. I guess the happiest school memory was being able to attend Bell High School for 3 years and some few weeks and I was able to graduate with my class because of a very special principle at Bell High. I will always be grateful to Mr. Dunn for all he did to help me during a very trying time in my life. The teacher that inspired me most was Mrs Kennedy, my English teacher in 11th grade. She was a very special lady and cared a great deal for her students. I guess my biggest crush in high school was a boy named Lonnie Starnes and another by the name of Gary Conway. They seemed to be very nice young men. If I could do it all over again, I would, but I would very much like to do it and live in one place for all that time in my life. Workplace After graduation my family moved back to the small town my mother was from. Not many jobs to be found then in such a small place. I worked for a short time in my cousins toy store and that was a great deal of fun. I came to Dallas in January of 1964 and went to work for Southwestern Bell. I could have gone to work in the business office but I thought it would be more fun to be a long distance operator and I had a friend that was already working there in that position. I was unable to get a transfer to the Ft Worth office, so I quit after 8 months then applied again after I moved. Went back to work for Southwestern Bell and worked until my first child was born. I quit again and stayed home for 5 years as a housewife and mommy. I finally went back to work for Southwestern Bell in 1971 and stayed until 1996, when I was offered early retirement. With 26 years and 11 months service I took the early retirement. After being off for 3 years, my oldest daughter talked me into applying for a job at Wells Fargo, where she was working. I have now been there for over 5 years. Working on a second retirement. Crazy huh!! I like what I do, but I am ready to call it quits again. I don't think I have ever had the heart to be a career woman. I was not cut from that material. I did work for a Hallmark store for a short time between the other jobs. It was very enjoyable. I loved meeting the people and helping them find things in the store that they needed or wanted whichever the case may be. I hope to quit or retire again in the next 2-5 years.
