Carrie's Story

After leaving Bearden I went to Nashville for 4 years and got my engineering degree from Vanderbilt. It was there that I met David Linn, who would become my husband in 1993. After we graduated from Vandy we moved to Houston where I took a job as an engineer working for DuPont on the Houston Ship Channel and he began medical school at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. We were married in 1993. I was in the process of getting my Master's in Electical and Computer Enginering Part time while still working at Dupont when I realized that I wasn't really enjoying my work. I wanted to do something in the medical field but felt I was too old/tired to start over in med school. We had just gotten 2 puppies so I started hanging out at the vet clinic every Saturday to see if I liked that and I did very much! They wrote me letters of recommendation and before I knew it I was starting vet school at Texas A&M in the fall of 1996. Dave stayed behind in Houston so we had a commuter marriage for a few years there. When he finished his residency we thought he would be stationed at San Antonio but instead they put him at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, OH. This was going to mean an even bigger commute or I would have to transfer to Ohio State, between my 2nd an...Expand for more
d 3rd years of vet school. The schools were very accomodating and let me transfer so now we were Ohio bound. I graduated from Ohio State in 2000 but decided to stay and do a 1 year internship in small animal medicine/surgery as this was my main interest. During this time our first child, Taylor was born. I finished the internship in early Sept 2001 and we were in the process of moving back to Dayton so Dave wouldn't have such a big commute. Of course everyone remembers what happened 9/11/01 and before I knew it Dave was deployed for 6 months and I was at home in an unpacked house with an 8 month old and very newly pregnant with our 2nd child. I call these the dark years. Fortunately we had some amazing neighbors living across the street that were retired Air Force that taught the true meaning of helping and caring about people. The girls and I were completely taken under their wing and I have always felt I owed a debt of gratitude to those dear people. Dave came back from the middle east and Megan was born a few months later, in May. We decided to move back to Knoxville as his obligation to the Air Force was over and both our families lived in Knoxville. Plus there was an opening for an ER doctor at UT hospital which was pretty appealing to Dave.
