Carrie Edwards's Story

Life I can't believe it's been 20 years. After spending 4 1/2 years with a man with control issues as well as significant drug issues, I finally put myself first and ended the engagement and the relationship. I met my husband, Todd, while working at the Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorneys' Office (he is now a Lieutenant with the Albemarle County Police Department). We got married on the first anniversary of our first date, in 1994. Several years ago, after much discussion and thought, we decided not to have children. Our life is very fulfilling just as it is, and we weren't really up for the responsibility and significant life change that children would bring. We do have 3 children with fur, Jack Russell terriers that we are a little over the top about! We built a house in Crozet and moved in right after we got married, and 5 years later moved to his family's farm in Orange County. Six years after that, we bought a piece of property just over the line into Albemarle County in Gordonsville with a nasty old rancher on it, so we tore that down and built a timber frame Cape Cod. We acted as our own general contractors - something we would NEVER recommend to anyone - and the project turned into a 3-year nightmare that brought us to the brink of financial and emotional ruin. With the generous help of friends and family we were able to move in on October 23, 2005. Four days later, on my way home from work, an 8-point buck that had been hit by an oncoming car went airborne, striking my car and breaking into 2 pieces. The rear piece of the deer came through my windshield, striking me in the face and head. After a ride on Pegasus that I don't remember, and surgery to implant a plate in the side of my head where my skull had been crushed, I am pleased to report that I am doing very well. Again, my friends and family rallied around me, and my recovery was very easy as a result. The accident definitely gave me a new perspective on just about everything, and I am actually thankful that it happened - even though I could have gained new perspective through something less traumatic! That is the story behind the "Bring it On!" t-shirt I'm wearing in the photo; my youngest sister and her husband gave it to me for my birthday this year, and I just think it's great! If you can't laugh at adversity, you'll never make it through! My sister Aimee (WAHS 1989) married David Gaedecke (WAHS 1988), and they have given us two nieces and two nephews, ages 1 to nearly 10. My mom, who used to work at WAHS, is doing great. She is the office manager at Hill and Wood Funeral Home, so if any of you have had the misfortune of having to go there you may have seen her. My latest passion is pole dancing. I have been taking classes since April of 2006, and I absolutely love it! At first I was so mad at my girlfriend for talking me into it, and now I can't stop! It has really boosted my self-esteem and given me a real sense of empowerment. I would recommend the class to every woman! While I still think that strippe...Expand for more
rs are pretty gross, I at least have a newfound respect for the physical demands of the "sport." Aside from that, the only other decision I'm wrestling with is whether or not I should get a tattoo, and where I should put it. I don't think I'm really that much different now than I was in high school. I've got some gray hair and wrinkles, and instead of growing UP I've grown OUT a little, but I'm still me! I really do believe that you're only as old as you feel, and even though I'm 38 (gulp) I still feel very young! I am looking very forward to the reunion - that is the motivation behind updating my Classmates page so extensively! School Do I really want to let everyone know - or remind the ones who already knew - who my biggest crushes were? No, I don't think so! The only teachers that I really recall with fondness are Mrs. Anderson, the teacher I took business classes with, and Mrs. Shuey, who is still our number-one supporter! If I could go back to high school and take some of the knowledge that I have now, I think it would be great. I didn't have a horrible high school experience, but I know that if I went back armed with knowledge it would be even better than it was. Spirit Week was always a real blast, and I loved all of the school dances - dancing is something that I still love to do, as often as possible! Much to my parents' dismay I was suspended for 3 days as a Senior for drinking at a school dance, so that was my big rebellious act (at least that the school and my parents really knew about). In my defense, if my girlfriend hadn't gotten sick in the bathroom no one would have found out! Not having to take any final exams my senior year was also pretty great! I got some good sun before graduation! Anyway, I do look back on high school with a good feeling. Even though I didn't stay in touch with anyone on any regular basis (isn't that horrible?) I always enjoy running into my classmates unexpectedly. I hope that a lot of them will actually come to the reunion this year. Workplace I went to work the Monday after Beach Week, and I've never stopped! I started out as a medical receptionist at Albemarle Medical Associates, and I got fired nine months later. I was then hired as a legal assistant, and went on to spend 18 years with the same boss, going from a private law practice to the Albemarle County Commonwealth's Attorneys' Office, where I spent 15 of those years (and met my husband, who is now a Lieutenant with the Albemarle County Police Department). During that time I sat for the national accreditation exam and became a Certified Paralegal. It was long past time to move on, and in September of 2006 I came to work at PBM Products in Gordonsville as a paralegal, and I LOVE it! It's also just 4 miles from home, which is a nice break from commuting from Gordonsville to Charlottesville every day (man, I hate Pantops traffic). Military I was never in the military, but my husband was. He spent 3 years in Berlin, Germany as a military policeman, and was there when the Wall came down.
