Susan's Story
After graduating from Clairemont I went on to San Diego State and graduated with a degree in Art. I also earned my teaching credential at SDSU and taught high school art in San Marcos for 35 years. I taught at San Marcos High School for 28 years and 7 years at the new high school in San Marcos, Mission Hills High. I just recently retired and I'm enjoying the new chapter in my life!
I have fond memories of my years at Clairemont High. My first day at Clairemont was the day it snowed in San Diego in '67. My family had just moved back from New York so it was very odd to wait for the bus and see that snow sprinkling down! I particulary enjoyed my art classes at Clairemont and was inspired by Mr. Hay to continue my studies in art. My English teachers, Mrs. Moore and Mr. Grove taught me so much and I really loved studying French--Mme. Moller was wonderful. I am very grateful to all of my teachers for all they gave me.
I spent two entire summers ('73,'76) travelling around Europe doing the Eurail pass, youth hostel, sub-starvation budget tour. I consider that as a huge part of my education. I still love to travel but I don't have the luxury of time now as I did then-- to travel with an itinerary that was so flexible day to day. It's amazing to think about how great an adventure that was.
It was fun growing up in University City and it was a new neighborhood then. I loved Marcy School. Mr. Carroll was our principal and seemed to know every st...Expand for more
udent's name. The entire school was portables (we called them bungalows) for the 2 1/2 years our class went there. (The first few months we spent at Alcott Elementary in Clairemont) Does anyone have the Marcy school pictures that they could post in an album? Remember the Halloween carnivals--including a bonfire on the playground?
I attended School of the Madeleine for 7th and 8th grade and made many friends there. My 9th grade year was spent at Einstein Jr. High and I have great memories of that year. I spent the beginning of 10th grade in NY state, then we moved back to University City.
My friend Susan Zimmerman lived right behind us in UC and was a year older. She and I saw the Beatles in concert twice!
My parents are both in good health and still live in University City. All of my brothers and sisters live in San Diego except for Cheryl who lives in Temecula with her family.
I get to see Kim Kauffman Brast when she visits from NorCal. Karen Miller showed up in my classroom at back-to-school night and I discovered I had her daughter in my class. I later had her son in class as well. I live in Encinitas with my husband Brian. Both of my daughters haved graduated from college and are doing well. Claire graduated from UCSB and loves her job as an event planner. Moira graduated from UC Davis and is quite the world traveler. She is currently teaching English in Spain.
We grew up in an interesting time, didn't we? Hope you are all well.
