Catherine's Story
Life
My Spouse
I was a television writer by day, doing stand up comedy by night at the Improv, the Comedy Store and the Playboy Club in Los Angeles. Bernie Clinch had just moved to LA from Peoria IL. I was hanging out with Sam Kinison (before he became SAM KINISON) and since Sam was from Peoria, he and Bernie started hanging out. One night at the Improv, my throat was dry and I started coughing. I couldn't get the bar-slut's attention, so Bernie offered me a sip of his beer. While I was drinking, he started repeating one of my routines - but with a better punch line! I was instantly smitten. Our first date was November 15th, 1981. That night, I KNEW this was the man I was going to marry - although it took him a while longer to figure that out. We've been together for 20 years and we're still running around like a couple of newlyweds. He has helped me to become the best version of myself. We have three incredible sons - 15, 13 and 10.

e care unit, followed by two more years hooked up to an oxygen tank and various other machines. The worst moment of my life was when we had to perform CPR on our dining room table. His bills totaled $1.1 million. The Writer's Guild Health Fund paid $868,000 and the rest of that debt fell into our laps. We went through hell...trying to keep Matthew alive, putting a bad doctor out of business and then (much to our surprise) having two more children - Brian and Joey.
Matthew has multiple disabilities - chronic lung disease, non-crippling cerebral palsy, visual impairment and profound deafness. In spite of these challenges, he is quite intelligent, fully verbal (no sign language), has taught himself how to play piano and composes incredible music.
Brian and Joey are highly gifted and quite precocious. They live the life of Hollywood kids, but manage it quite effectively. Because they have a brother who faces challenges, they have a remarkable depth of compassion and consideration for others. I am proud to have introduced these three fellas to the world.
