Catherine's Story

I am the proud mother of five children - three daughters, two sons, and one very wonderful granddaughter. What happens from here in my relationship? I am not sure. Need more info? Just ask; its available to the right people. I have a background in freelance writing, editing, and graphic design. I am a handcrafted gemstone jewelry designer; I work with all kinds of gemstones, except diamonds. I planned to return to college to complete my degree in journalism; as we all know, the newspaper business is dying. I always wanted to be a nurse when I was a little girl. My family and friends thought that was a good idea. As it turns out, it was just a fantasy, but I still enjoy helping people. I decompress through visits to the Shenandoah National Forest in Virginia to photograph the wildlife and the sunrises. I love long drives, writing when The Muse comes out of hiding, and making something beautiful through graphic design, or expressing myself through my jewelry. I never did anything wild in school; as a matter of fact, I avoided doing anything wild, but my friends were a bit racey. I am still very careful and cautious. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have a cell phone, my GPS, and a least one cup of coffee to be able to deal with the day-to-day assignments and issues. My inspiration comes from God, which may sound corny to those who assume that life is a coincidence. After such a horrible experience at high school, it was important to forgive those who were cruel and teased me mercilessly. I welcome the opportunity to get to know who they are as mature individuals. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Martee Bottorff, because she was (and still is) my very best friend. We recently got back in touch with one another, and I am having a wonderful time reconnecting with the funniest person I have ever known. If I could bottle her and sell her humor in a capsule, I would be very wealthy. My passions include writing and editing, graphic design, loose gemstones and designing gemstone jewelry. I have a Moluccan Cockatoo, a Noble Macaw, several cats, and two adopted dogs from the Humane Society; one dog is a Shepard-Collie mix named Leo, the other is a Hound-Shepard mix named Albert. I suppose my biggest surprise was going through a divorce and being left for another woman; needless to say, there was a lot of trauma and drama. I have five beautiful children, and always thought I would remain married to their father. Sometimes, it is strange how life throws you a curve. In case anyone reads this, I am still working on forgiveness, and I wish things were different. If I had known then what I know now, I would have high-tailed it out of my wedding day - it was a mistake. I think that what I have learned most from having five children is that they are all individuals; they have grown up to be different than I would have imagined. I always admired my Aunt Alice and wanted to be just like her; I finally understand why my Aunt was so crabby most of the time because no one ever appreciated the things she did for her family. Unfortunately, we are not on speaking terms any longer, but I wish things were different between us. My Uncle Tommy, whom I loved like a father, is now suffering from dimentia and it was a painful realization that he remembers nothing...Expand for more
. My heart aches for my cousins in the loss of their dad. I think I would like to see Elinor Turbov again; she was my junior high teacher who taught me English skills that have served me well. If I won $100 million, I'd give some of it to conservation groups, spend some on buying some land, building a house, and donate a portion to someone who could make a difference in the world. Happiness is situational, at best. Am I happy? I am not sure...but ask me tomorrow. I am still looking for something so elusive as happiness, but I believe it is still possible. I suspect it isn't anywhere I have looked already. I stil have aspirations for a career, since I spent a lot of time raising a family and then I had to start over again. Hopefully, my gemstone jewelry business will help to make ends meet some day. At this point, just finding a job would be helpful. Thankfully, creativity is new every morning...and if not jewelry, perhaps photography... it is a passion of mine, and I love graphic design projects. Who knows? I am open for anything at this point. What happened to my first crush? I prefer to think about someone I loved long ago, and would like to have dinner and reminisce a little...and find out if they still make my heart flutter, and if their kiss is as passionate as I remember. My best friend would tell you I'm too much of a perfectionist, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as someone who is always tinkering with the results. I don't have any trophies on my mantle, but I did make the National Deans List while in college. Several of my children have had academic and sports recognition, and one is an aspiring Broadway singer and performer bound for NYC! Break a leg! She has the most amazing voice, and about a three-octave range, maybe a little more. If I had a chance to start over, I would have gone to college before I got married, but life is filled with regrets, and some things are regrettable long after the decisions were made. An addendum: I think I would have chosen my partners much more carefully than I have in the past, but maybe it isn't too late. In 10 years, I hope to be making progress, and I'm going to get there by living one day at a time. My oldest friend is Martee Bottorff -- she is Martee Crosson now. After a long separation through fate and time, we have reconnected. Martee always made me laugh, and I consider that to be the most valuable gift anyone can give to anyone. I think what might surprise everyone at my class reunion, would be to find out that I made the National Deans List with a 4.0 GPA. I was always considered to be stupid -- surprise :) My childhood memory that still haunts me to this day is my alcoholic mother, and my abusive father who left for a dumb blonde. The best memory I have is time I spent with my Nana, when all of my cousins were off in Canada living on an island, and I helped in the flower garden, and made bread on Saturdays. My cousins had everything...but I had my Nana all to myself every summer until she passed away when I was 18. I cannot say where I am headed, but anywhere is better than where I am right now. Need clarification? It's available to those in my inner-circle. Even if I haven't seen you in 20 years or more, you may very well be in my inner-circle. :) I hope to hear from you.
