Catherine's Story
Our family lived in Keams Canyon. When I began High School, I rode the bus back and forth to Holbrook, daily. The trip was so long, that I did not have time to study! My grades began to drop and my parents then enrolled me at St Michaels, beginning in January 1966. It was a hard transition, but I made friends quickly. My best friend was Angie Natanaba. Thanks to her and my classmates, it became easier and easier to be away from home! I had new sisters! Mary Talemptewa, Carol King, Bobbi Yazzie, Gloria Charlie, Veronica Keene, Margie Francisco, Toni Lujan, Dulce Thomas, just to name a few!
At St. Michaels, I played Basketball, softball, and some track. I loved the Sisters, and lay teachers! I feel that my education was superb thanks to teachers like Sister Ignacious, Sister Patrick Marie, Sister Dolores.
In the summer of 1968, my family moved to Sells, AZ and my parents wanted me close to them, so I was moved to another boarding school, Villa Carondelet High School in Tucson. It was very hard and I missed my friends, but...Expand for more
made new friends and graduated.
After graduation from the Villa, I attended the University of Arizona. I married my high school sweetheart, Mauro, who I met at the first school dance at Villa Carondelet. (Blind date!) We will be celebrating our 45th Anniversary this fall.
Though I had many "careers", my most rewarding one is that of "Mom". However, being a grandmother is quite exciting and enjoyable too!
We try to stay active. I am a member of our church choir. I love the AZ Wildcats, enjoy the Phoenix Symphony, cheer for the Cardinals and Diamondbacks, and look forward to early morning walks through our neighborhood in Surprise, AZ.
I always hold a special place in my heart for St Michaels and went back and visited 20 years ago. It looked the same! I met with Sister Genevieve, (who had been my Home Economics teacher) but she did not remember me. There were so many students that passed through, I was just one of many!
Thank you classmates for making my experience at St Michaels so special and may God always be with each of you!
