Catherine's Story

LIFE GRADUATED high school and no idea what to do. I went off to PCC to take a few classes. But there's ink in my genetic code so I worked on the college newspaper in a couple of different editorial positions and wrote for them also. Explored my love of photography by learning how to do the basics. Also worked a lot of jobs to support myself. At one point, I was working one full time job and two part time jobs while going to school. Whew!!! Not much time for anything else. One of my fellow editors at PCC was going on to Stanford to get a degree in anthropology. Intrigued, I went to the La Brea Tar Pits on her recommendation. There was a sign in the Paleo Lab window "Volunteers Needed". I signed up and began working in the Paleo Lab (aka "the fishbowl") and in the actual tar pits. Found out I really liked paleontology and anthropology. Learned a lot and met a lot of interesting people. I collected fossils in the Mojave Desert and from other sites around SoCal for a L.A. museum. And I also learned about Molly Malones on third and something ( a little age showing here-it could be sixth and something) in L.A. Met my husband, a geologist, doing all this. We have two boys. Have been very involved in scouti...Expand for more
ng. My sons are both Eagle Scouts. And we've lived where we are now for quite a few years. My husbands work keeps asking him to transfer overseas. As for that, we'll see. THE WILDEST THING that I can remember doing in high school.... was sneaking into the Arboretum late one night after a movie, with a date, and setting off fireworks. Someone, a watchman probably, turned all the sprinklers on and people started pouring out from everywhere. Apparently the bushes were full. We couldn't stop laughing as we ran for the car. MY OLDEST FRIEND (who also went to AHS a couple of years behind me) and I could not stand each other when we met. I worked in Juniors at May Co & she worked in Womens. Juniors was "THE" dept to work in and she was a floater. She assumed we were all you-know-whats. I assumed she was one! We ran into each other again while we were both working at the Star News. She was a photographer and I was writing sports. A lot of my fellow journalists from my PCC days were working there and she was friends with them. We became instant friends. And we're still friends after 30 odd yrs. ' I've joined this site to reconnect with friends. And have reconnected with several of my oldest friends from college.
