Catherine's Story
Life
Since graduating from Schreiber in 1965, I went to work as a clerk/typist for U.S. School of Music/Washington School of Art located on Main Street in Port. When LaSalle Home Study Extension Course took over in 1973, I was terminated from my job; but, was able to get another clerical/typist job at Publishers Clearing House. My first position was in one department where I read customer's mail and sent out replies to them. In 1983, I transferred over to another department, where with co-workers, we tried to prevent problems, with magazine companies. In June of 1999, some of the jobs, in the department, would be staying in Port and other jobs would be transferred out to Syosset; August of 1999, I started my job in Syosset; worked for 3-1/2 months. On November 14th, after working for PCH for 26 years, I was terminated along with 120 people that day. During 1999, there were at least 500 employees terminated from PCH. ths later, I found a job at Global Computer Supplies in Port, off of West Shore Road, by Bar Beach. I was there until March 2004; because, the computer division was loosing money. The sister company, called Tiger Direct was going to take over. It is August 16, 2004, the day Elvis died, and I'm working at a job that's only part-time. Since I've started here, I have been looking for a full-time job; they are few and far between. I would like to get a full-time job, where I don't have to worry about any of my bills; especially paying for my medical coverage. As a part-time employee, you don't have any benefits. If, I ever win Lotto or Megamillion, I definitely will retire.
I try to keep my yard, neat; plant when I can. I have also started to empty out my basement, throwing out what I don't want; then to the next item on my list. My goal is to be able to sell my house and move into a Condo or Townhouse and have no other worries.
