Cathleen's Story
Life
Hey folks! After SRHS I entered Middlesex CC. I was so bored my second year that I decided to join the U.S. Air Force! I entered on 1 December 1982. During those years I had the following duties: 16 years as a Law Enforcement Specialist, 1 year as a Combat Arms Specialist (were I trained new recruits, ROTC cadets and base personnel marksmanship skills in 6 different weapons - talk about a scary!) For 3 years I was the Education & Training Specialist, ensuring over 300 assigned personnel are properly trained in their particular AF specialty. 1 Year I performed duties as the Career Development Course writer, responsible for writing the promotion study material for over 5000 personnel in my job specialty. I ended my career as the Operations Superintendent for my unit. After 23 years, my retirement ceremony was held on 28 Jul 06. The picture I have posted includes the family members that traveled to San Antonio to attend. My retirement ended a 23 year career and was effective on 1 Sep 2006. Those years I spent in the military were an honor and a privilege and would never trade them. I neer intended to do 20 years. Frankly I thought my mouth would get me in trouble the first year! But I survived and was ready to retire at exactly 20 years - 1 Dec 2002! Unfortunetly life had other plans. First, the tragic and cowardly events of Sep 11th (2001) resulted in all retirements suspended until further notice. Almost 1 year later, that was lifted and I again started the proces...Expand for more
s to retire. While waiting, I was diagnosed with systemic lupus and required 2 years of treatment so I I pulled my retirement papers and decided to stay on active duty during that phase. With that completed, I was ready to retire on 4 Nov 2004 and it would have been the best birthday present ever. That changed when I was notified of my promotion to E7 - requiring me to stay 2 more years! The AF has taken me to terrific locations, such as Korea, San Antonio, Texas (3 times and now my home), New Hampshire, Guam, United Kingdom and New Mexico.
Since retiring, I worked for the Northside Independent school Disctrict, 1 year as a middle school substitute teacher and 1 year as an Instructional Assistant, working in the school library. I started this school year off in the library once again, but I was recently hired on as a civili service (civilian) employee at Lackland AFB - in my old squadron, as a Firearms/Marksmanship Instructor! Right back to the unit I retired from! Feels great to be home. So that is where I am at the moment.
I completed my Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Education/Human Services in 2000 and my Master's in Adult Education/Distance Learning through the University of Phoenix in 2004. My Mom and 3 of my sister's (Donna, Maureen and Debbie) still live in SR. Sharon has just recently relocated, with her family, to Peach Tree City, Georgia and my brother Bill is in Middlesex. They will always know where I am. Keep in touch, I'd love to hear from you!
