Cathy's Story

Life Not one to be outdone by my younger sister (Deborah Wright, Class of '71), I thought I might expend a little energy and post a few lines! I am deeply saddened, however, that I cannot use the appropriate font for my life... Since I left the hallowed halls of MSJ, I have led a crazy, crazy life. My parents moved to Arizona immediately after my graduation. I then went to work, school, Europe, and school again, but left without a degree. (I now have enough credits to get a degree, but really don't see the purpose anymore.) Anyhow...I then met my husband in 1973, and we married at the end of December that same year. We moved to Oregon in March, 1977, and have been living in the Portland area--Beaverton--since then. We now own a small commercial construction company, which has provided us with food and shelter these many years. (Ugh--that sounds rather ponderous, doesn't it?) Going on... I had a daughter, Amanda, in January of 1975, and two sons--Shane in October 1977, and Ryan in May, 1979. They are, and have always been, wonderful people--even as teenagers!--and I am privileged and proud to have been a part of their lives. They have spent most of their adult lives in New York doing volunteer work, although my daughter is now back in Oregon after working several years with Holocaust survivors. (She is a paralegal, and she volunteered her time helping them with the paperwork necessary to receive monies from the settlement with the Swiss banks & German government.) I think she needs some down time now... I know many of you will wonder why I posted the picture I did as my "Now" shot--the reason is two-fold. First, I was trying to outdo Craig Johnson's "Then " picture--I thought I might also be as frivolous and fun-loving as my friend, since it sooooo goes against my character. Second, it captures my present mood of life--OK, probably my attitude my entire life! Life is just too convoluted to be distracted by all the roadblocks we put in our way...I'd really rather be having a great time with my family and friends, and still make time for all of my "save-the-world" activities--no, I have not matured as the years have gone by! Both of parents are still alive and living in Gold Canyon, AZ. For those of you not yet put to sleep by my prose: My sisters Linda (Class of 1967) and Debby (Class of 1971) live near me in Oregon, as does my brother Chris. My brothers Mark (Class of 1973), Scott and Dave live in AZ. Our family has managed to stay intact, despite the effects of time and unforeseen occurrence... Enough already! I will cut this short. When, and if, I get some more time, I will expound on the details if anyone is interested, or not...it all depends on my mood. Isn't it grand some things don't change?!! June 3, 2010 I thought I might update my story, and bring it into this decade, or even millennium... My son and his wife gave birth to our first grandchild, Sara Elizabeth, on March 11, 2010 in Charleston, South Carolina. Shane & Elizabeth moved there in 2007, after living in New York since their marriage in 2004. Shane is working as a contractor, with his specialty in restoring old homes. They purchased a home on James Island in 2008, so all of our trips to visit have been busman's holidays! We have completely redone the kitchen, both baths, the dining room, and the nursery. Since this...Expand for more
takes in all of my skill set--tearing down walls, moving windows, completely redoing kitchens, spending someone else's money--Frank says it's my best skill--I am in my element!!! Hmmm, I wonder, with all of those great gifts, why didn't they move closer? We enjoy having a new addition, but the distance is a problem. Any thoughts on how to make it easier would be welcome! On a sadder note--My mom passed away on March 26, 2010 from complications of a fall. She was 80 years old last August, and my parents had celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary last January. It was sudden, but not unexpected. She had been in declining health for the last few years, so we are grateful she is out of pain. She had lived a long life, full of good thoughts and deeds, so we will miss her. We are not overly sad, though, since we know she is resting and at peace, and our hope in the resurrection assures us we will see her again soon. (John 5: 28, 29; I Thessalonians 4:13) My dad is floundering a bit, since he has not been alone for a VERY long time, and most of my siblings live near me in Oregon. This will probably be more of a challenge than taking care of my mom was, because I inherited most of my personality traits from my dad...enough said! We are all still struggling to come to grips with the loss, as she spent every spring and summer with us in Oregon. It seems strange she is not here... That, in a nutshell, is what is going on. I will try and update sooner the next time... August 2016: So here's more in the ongoing saga: My older sister Linda died in August 20111, from a combination of alcohol and prescription drugs. She had struggled with addiction most of her adult life, so it was not a complete shock to us. With her death, I took over the role of grandma to her two granddaughters--since they live in Florida, is has proven to be quite an ordeal! My dad passed away in July, 2013, so we are now officially orphans--it's odd to be in that situation. No more phone calls asking mundane questions, seeking the answer to trivia from the past, no more reflection on whether or not the things my children and grandchildren are doing have their root in me--gone, all gone. There are still days when I reach for the phone to call them, and then I remember. However, with advancing age, those days are growing fewer! We had a grandson, Jacob Franklin, born on Linda's birthday in 2015. With his birth, Frank & I decided we did NOT have enough headaches, so we took all of our available cash and purchased a home next door to the grandkids--we are still in the process of remodeling, but hope to have it up and going in a few weeks. We will be putting in on AirBNB when we are not there, since I would like to stay in Oregon for most of the year. As our TOTAL retirement looms--I retired several years ago--we might have to revisit that... Debby retired a few years ago, but she has found her niche taking care of her grandchildren--she lives in Vancouver, WA, so I do not see her as often as I had for the previous 30 years. She often accompanies me to help me fix up the new home--there is no better housecleaner on the planet, honestly! And you guys all know how much I love housework, RIGHT? If you are reading this and want to have a place to stay in Charleston, SC, please message me and let me know! Hugs to all....Cathy
