Cati's Story
Life
Peace and love to all my former classmates and co-workers. Well, since the '60's, I have changed and changed and changed. Most of us probably did the same thing while attempting to "find" ourselves. My workforce participation started with office work at Spreckels Sugar Co. during the hot late '60's. By the early '70's, I worked at the Post Office, then did bookkeeping and taxes and then legal assisting at a community legal defense firm. Then a short stint at U.C. Berkeley (Extension) and San Jose State (Extension). After that, I worked with the Human Resources Corp., Public Advocates (considered law school, but changed my mind), the ACLU, Capp Street Foundation and Legal Aid Society. The thirst for knowledge came upon me again and I majored in African/African-American History, under the Ethnic Studies Program at San Francisco State. My mind was expanded more at this time than any other time in my life. I came out in 1987 and spread the truth about Black history whenever and wherever I can. I visited the Middle East in 1985 with the National Conference of Black Lawyers and worked hard to free South Africa, Haiti, Namibia, Nicaragua, El Salvador, etc. Suffered a severe back injury in Africa in 1990 and an on-the-job injury that put me out for a decade (severe arm nerve damage bilaterally due to an erg...Expand for more
onomic nightmare of a workstation) and returned to help the people. Did advocacy work with welfare recipients trying to get off the rolls and become self-sufficient; coordinated a violence prevention program and now doing grief counseling now to families who have experienced critical incidents. It's challenging but fulfilling. This position, however, took a tragic toll on me and I am now off on medical leave for stress. Thus, I am semi-retired and contemplating working, once again, on environmental issues. We must love the Earth.
I'm a staunch believer in the Sixties montra, "All we need is LOVE". If the world followed the teachings of Stevie Wonder, Earth, Wind & Fire, the Beatles, Michael Jackson, etc., the world would be a better place. In my old age, I've fallen in love with the songs and stylings of Eric Benet. Also, I'm a staunch Trekkie. Live long and prosper.
College
I thoroughly enjoyed my college days. Learning the "real" history of the African-American culture did me a world of good and elevated my self-esteem like nothing else. Taking an African-Haitian dance class got my body into shape and helps me do the Caribbean dance thing today without looking like an off-beat, no dancing twit.
I currently use what I learned to teach the young and uninformed older people, which is most uplifting.
