Cecilia's Story

After reading Dale Steele's story, I was inspired to chime in. We certainly were thrust into an era where we chose to either challenge, support or simply be oblivious on issues such as civil disobedience, the Vietnam War, Roe vs Wade, the Civil Rights movement, etc. The reality of the Vietnam War struck home when we received news that my brother Louie had stepped on a land mine. My fear and anger were barely controllable after I visited my brother and there was no one available at the military hospital to clean my brother's scalp and the wound that had created a dent in his skull. So -- I got him into a wheel chair and took him over to the sink and we both ended up with big smiles. It was one of my first lessons in overcoming fear. My brother told me the staff just didn't have time to clean him. He was just one of the many that landed in the no-man's zone called triage. He had survived, was out of danger, and was home. The great news is that he is now retired, a grandpa, and spends his days fishing, camping, taking beach walks, visiting friends and Army buddies. and leaving great voice mail messages generally without a means to get back to him (he forgets his cell#, doesn't remember the password and his vm is full). I love him. The Rios trait; we'd rather see you in person. My experience at the VA hospital gave me that "Wake up, life's too short" jolt. I had been attending SBCC, doing a little modeling, having a whole lot of fun, and working locally. I soon moved to Hawaii where i had a whole lot of more fun and eventually married. I worked for a lobbyist in Hawaii and learned so much about politics that I stopped voting for about six years. I also learned that I love island life and will forever be Hawaiian at heart. I felt more at home among the folks on the islands than I ever felt anywhere else. I love my community in Santa Barbara, but my goal is to stay around here part of the year and over there part of the year. My love of dance took a hiatus (remember modern dance), but is alive and well now that my children are grown. Dancing hula fulfills so much for me. I know that I will dance spiritually, even when my bod...Expand for more
y won't move. I have danced competitively for Ka Hale Hula O Pilialoha O'kalani O' Hilo and it has been the best time of my life. I have recently been "bumped up" to the kupuna division (old hula dancers) but still have a few moves . . . . My children grew up to be great people. They each have Hawaiian names . . . . . Isn't it wonderful to be able to name children and they don't have any say! Makoa served in the Marine Corps for 5 years and will be starting UCSB in Winter 09, majoring in communications and philosophy. He has accomplished so much. I loved watching him play baseball as a young man - what a natural. Each time I hear of war fatalities, I grieve for the families and feel thankful that my son came home. I prayed that my son would not have to take a life and that prayer was answered. Makoa is a wonderful man, so genuine and compassionate. If you ever want to have a thought provoking and worthwhile discussion, Makoa is the person to engage. Cielo (Puanani) graduated from the notorious Hampshire College and is a designer/product line manager and travels to China to oversee the production of footwear (primarily Simple - she also worked for TEVA and UGG - at the same company). She was the Junior Spirit of Fiesta and later continued with Middle Eastern dancing while at college. She recently became engaged; but has not set a date . . . sounds familiar. She's a "dahling" and a rascalette. We spend a lot of time together, cooking, swimming, shopping, and swapping shoes and handbags. As for me, I have enjoyed being among some great folks and being open to learning more and more and more. I think it might be time for me to finish college. I love going to classes, doing research and completing homework, but I abhor test taking, because they ask dumb questions. My life has been a wonderous adventure and that will never stop. My politics range the gamet and the candidates don't really appeal to me. The constant in my life is my belief in God and my gratitude for the many blessings that I have received and I am ready for more. Now write your story. A hui hou (until we meet again) Me ke aloha Cecilia Kipulani Rios
