Celia's Story
Life
The 20th (Hawaii) and 25th (Las Vegas!) reunion came and went. Both were fun. There are pictures and stuff posted on another website. Email me (celia.lee(at)alum.mit.edu), and I'll send you the link. I'm in Boston, married, our first son (Kekoa) born in January 2001, daughter (Noelani) was born in September 2003, house, dog, cats, working for a software company, blah, blah, blah.
High School
I can't think of my biggest crush--I think I've erased any of those painful thoughts from my memory bank. I have a lot of strange images stuck in my head--like those few times that they served packets of peanuts with lunch (remember those 50cent lunches!!!), and the whole cafeteria ended up in a peanut fight, peanuts all over the floor. And I remember when we had morning swim practice at 6 am, and it was still dark, and the pool was cold (well, cold for Hawaii...) and smooth like glass, and if I were the first one to dive in, I broke that smooth water under the dark morning sky, and between the cold shock of the water, and the stars and moon just visible in the sky, I have permanently etch an image of beauty of the moment into my brain. I remember waiting to cross the Kalanianaole hwy one morning after heavy rain, standing on the divider, and a bus came along in the bus lane right through a puddle, and those of us standing there were for a second in a tube of a thin wave from the splash. Another beautiful image, followed instantly by the unpleasantness of being soaked from head to foot by the ...Expand for more
muddy puddle water. I remember having to go to painful assemblies where we were supposed to have spirit competitions between the classes. I had a hard time getting into that, but it really seemed my whole class was like that, maybe even the whole school. I remember Mr. Lindsey eating grass in our english class one day to prove that we could be like Thoreau and live off the land. I remember falling asleep in Mr. Cole's history class, even though I really wanted to stay awake because he told great stories. I remember spending a lot of the time at the pool, all year long, waiting for practice, or practicing, and how the showers had no hot water, ever. I remember having lunch in Miss Leeman's class with the other class officers, and doing more socializing than any planning. I remember how we (mostly the swim team) would sit before the morning bell rang outside the swimming pool near those metal bleachers. now, I'm resortign to pretty mundane memories, so I'll stop.
College
I remember being at my first "party" during rush week, at one of the frats, and hearing some upperclassman tell the following joke. "What's the difference between garbage and an MIT coed? Garbage get's taken out once a week." I thought, "what am I doing here?" But it all turned out fine, and I have lots of great memories (parties, live bands, senior house courtyard, 2.70, swimming and the weight room), and a few painful ones (first calc test, HB Pompeii, mono, knocking a workpiece out of a lathe in the machine shop).
