Channing's Story
Life
As of Jan 2008 I will not be able to see guestbook signatures.
My family moved to Huntsville, AL after grade school at Capshaw.
I received 9 college credit hours from taking AP exams in high school. I took the first summer off but had a goal to finish in 3 years, since short semesters at UAH made it possible.
After a year of maximum hours, a summer of one class shy of maximum, and the next fall of maximum, I slowed down my schedule when I started lab sciences and planned to graduate after 3 years 3 months. I graduated Dec 1992 with a BS double major in Computer Science and Math.
After a year of trying to get a local job without experience, I started grad school and entered the co-op program. At the end of my first year in grad school, I was hired as a co-op at Intergraph Corporation in the Plotting department. I worked consecutive terms (by this time UAH had switched to more common long semesters) while still going to school all year and the spring semester of the next year and then was hired there full time two months later while still taking a summer class. My MS in Computer Science (Software Enginering) was conferred in 1997.
Intergraph sold our department and two others to Bentley Systems, Inc. best known for MicroStation. (Intergraph owns 30% of BSI). A lot of legal issues involving the two companies shouldn't be mentioned here. :) The deal was finalized at the end of 2000. I currently still work in the same department at the new company.
I was diagnosed with Meniere's Disease and Mitral Valve Prolapse in 2001, these two lead to extreme noise sensitivity and panic disorder. I had ear surgery for the Meniere's May 2001. I'm currently in Tinnitus Retraining Treatment (TRT), wearing hearing-aid like devices that are noise generators. They are supposed to retrain the ear/brain/nerves to filter sounds properly. 18-24 months, 90%+ success rate for hyperacusis. Another ear doctor did more tests and my pattern currently doesn'...Expand for more
t follow Meniere's, rather migraine dizziness which might be to blame for some of the hyperacusis as well (who really knows). Yet another doctor says that I have Meniere's Syndrome because all of the symptoms are there but less severe than the disease and they come and go vs. constant with the disease.
While still on salary I paid charity via the "Today" show for a walk-on role on "Providence." It was canceled early and even though it did better in its slower times than its replacement, I was in the Wedding Finale viewed by 11 million+. I sat next to Dana Daurey at the wedding. I did another charity role in "Coach Carter" and flew back and forth a lot in 2004 doing some volunteer and a couple of paid background jobs. That spring "Constellation" came to Huntsville for filming and I did one day on that. I finally moved to CA at the end of October to pursue acting.
I've been varrying levels of visibility and importance and varrying treatment of the background and budgets. I flew to New York Dec 2005 to be in a Robert De Niro movie he's directing and starring in along with Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, William Hurt. These two days gave me a total of 4 SAG Waivers so that I can now join the Screen Actors Guild.
Workplace
Beginning two days after Christmas 1994, I worked as a co-op in Plotting Applications Development at Intergraph Corporation. Our division was sold to Bentley Systems, Inc. the day after Christmas 2000. My title was Sr. Software Analyst.
I started doing background acting "regularly" in December 2004. I lived too far from LA then so I didn't work as often as I could have. It's very different from a 9 to 5. You usually don't know if you'll be working until the day before much less what time or where. You arrive on set knowing it could be 12 hours or more but might not be, so the pay varries too. When I go SAG I'll get paid better but might not be able to work full-time at it, which I haven't really done except Mar 2005.
