Linda Gail's Story

Linda is a native Californian. While Nursing was her career goal from the age of three, Operating Room Nursing became the aspiration from the age of eight. You could say she allowed a child to decide the direction of her life work! And you would be partially correct. The remainder of the impetus came from a desire to be of service (thank you, United Methodist Church). Married at 20 while in prenursing at UCLA during the height of the Vietnam Conflict, she left school to join her husband in his assignment in Turkey. She learned the language and they toured the Middle East, traveling extensively in Turkey; visiting Israel, Cyprus and Greece. The next assignment was in Louisiana, where son, Mark was born. After discharge from the military her husband moved the family to Fresno. She went back to school, finishing her nursing degree. From there she hired on at a community hospital as a new RN in the Operating Room. It was a dream come true. Meanwhile before the age of 50, her personal life radically changed. She divorced and married two more times only to be widowed at age 47. At the hospital she advanced from new staff nurse to coordinator of the ENT, Plastics and Colon-Rectal services. She became one of the first in the nation certified as an OR nurse (CNOR) and as an ENT nurse (CORLN). Eventually she progressed to manager of the department. After five years at that level she moved into staff education, giving code blue classes in the OR. She earned her ACLS (advanced cardiac life support) instructor certification. After 27 years in the career of her dreams she realized that old OR nurses work until they DROP and that the income generated does not compensate for the toll clinical patient care takes on the body. Years of overtime, weekends, holidays and night-call result in a cumulative exhaustion that never really goes away. With the decision to leave made, she noticed an ad in The Fresno Bee seeking RNs for clinical review of Workmen Compensation claims at a national insurance company. She answered it, was hired. Thus began a second career reading the operative reports of procedures in which she used to participate; making payment decisions. She earned her national designation as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC) after two years on the job and for the first time as a nurse she worked regular hours with all weekends off. Who knew that was possible? Eventually the local office closed in Fresno. After 3 months of collecting unemployment she found another clinical review position with a third party administrator. Finally, she met John. They married in 2002 and lived the best years of their lives, laughing and loving one another. Fast forward to 2013: Son, Mark married Jane in 2007. In September 2009 they welcomed Adam, their first child. He is now approaching age 4. He could remain ...Expand for more
an only child, I do not know. I DO know he is a delight to Grandma. He managed to keep them up at night for about a year. Now he is settled in a Spanish-immersion preschool, becoming quite fluent. Mom and Dad both took French in high school so it is fun for them trying to figure out what he is saying. Life took a sharp turn in 2011. The same year Linda moved into a new job with Health Net Managed Care Medi-Cal, John was diagnosed with ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) or Lou Gehrig disease (think of the physicist Steven Hawking). The diagnosis came after a series of tests. He kept his mind, but lost all ability to move (except his right arm). Skipping the details I will say he was hospitalized for the last 3 months of his life, had a ventilator breathing for him through a tracheostomy, endured a feeding tube and the very real prospect of going downhill from there. He was awake, aware and not happy. He also had an advanced directive in place regarding how much he would be willing to tolerate in an effort to keep his body alive. In mid-August he decided on just comfort care, which in the medical community meant he was ready to let go comfortably and without suffering. On August 20 2012 he left his body, heading out to the next phase of existence. His passing was tender and peaceful, surrounded by those who loved him. I kinda went away for awhile in spirit. I needed to recharge severely depleted energy and take a good look at what had just occurred with the goal of acceptance. I took some time off work, flew to Boston to visit Mark and Jane and Adam. That was very therapeutic. Adam and I built up and knocked down many block towers and train bridges. I read to him while he pretended I was some kind of mountain he had to climb. Went back to Fresno and to work. Lived like that for several months. Paid off all debts except the house but stopped opening mail and email. Grief can do that to a person. Local friends made certain I had enough to eat (like that has EVER been a problem), took me into their families and kept track of me. And now I am coming back to life, a different life to be sure, but life nevertheless. I still have meaningful work to do, interests to pursue, a home and 4-legged children to care for and friendships to nurture. Today I feel content but it has been a longer, more intricate journey than I ever expected. MORE: Life = Change = Life. Danny Deming and I reconnected (HERE of all places); and have discovered a shared, deep love connection that astonishes us more than I can say. 2014: I retired from Nursing altogether 05/01/14. On 05/10/14, Danny and I were married. Two months later I relocated to Waldport Oregon. We are happy; I am finding retirement life fulfilling (walk; bike; meditate)!. Living in Waldport is a blessing. This thing called Life is a Blast.
