Charleene's Story

Life I just returned in early October from a 3 week trip to Europe in September. Scott had been travelling for over a year and I decided to join him for a trek through Italy, Germany, Austria, France, and England before he ended his travels and headed back to the U.S. We met up in Rome, then went on to Venice, Florence, Pisa, and Milan, Italy. Drove through the Alps and we then stopped in Salzburg, Austria, and then went on to Munich, Germany for opening day of Oktoberfest. What a bachannal! Those Germans sure love their beer and drinking songs. We visited the Hof Brau House while there. What a hoot!! We met a business associate of my older son, Kevin, who lives in Germany and had dinner with him and his wife. Then on to 3 days in Paris, France, then took the Chunnel train to London which runs beneath the English Channel, and I finished up with 4 days in London before I flew home to Arizona. While in Paris and Munich, we met up with friends that Scott had met on his travels in India earlier in the year. They were wonderful hosts and friends to almost perfect strangers since Scott had only been acquainted with them for a few days before moving on to another travel location. We were overwhelmed by their hospitality. I had a wonderful, unbelieveable, awesome 3 weeks of vacation in Europe that I will never forget (barring Alzheimers.....Ha!). Now I am off for a week in the Reno, Nevada area to visit 4 girlfriends from high school (and two from elementary school). We should have a great time together laughing and appreciating what a treasure long-time friendships are. That's over 50 years now. Wow!!!!!! We can't be THAT old. Ha! Besides California, I've lived in Florida and Oregon, and now Arizona, but have travelled through about half of the states in the U.S. including Hawaii, and now 5 countries in Europe. I have 2 great sons, Kevin and Scott. Kevin has a company that manufactures parts for vehicles for off-roading (kevinsoffroad dot com) and is into real estate investing. Scott was a computer engineer for General Dynamics in Scottsdale. He quit after working there for 10 years and made a trek around the world (Oct 2007 that took a little over a year, returning in Oct. 2008). (He is back in Arizona and was rehired at General Dynamics in April 2009. And he is also teaching computer instruction at Collins College this semester.) During his world trek, his first stop was in Belize where he got his SCUBA certification so he can enjoy the underwater world too on his travels, including the Great Barrier Reef near Australia and New Zealand. He was in San Pedro de Atacama, Northern Chile on Feb. 1st. He sailed to Antarctica for 11 days and loved it! He headed to Araquipa, Peru on Feb. 2nd and Machu Pichu and Lake Titicaca. Scott flew out of South America Feb. 22nd and landed in Sydney, Australia. He took a plane to...Expand for more
Cairns, Australia, and then a ship out to the Great Barrier Reef and dove 9 times while there, amongst sharks and other interesting sea creatures. He said it was awesome! He got on a plane to Osaka, Japan on March 9th and traveled around Japan for 5 weeks. He left on April 15th for Shanghai, was there 4 days and headed to Hong Kong. He was there a few days and then on to Bangkok, Thailand, and Angkor Wat, Cambodia. He flew to Calcutta, India on May 20th, then on to Darjeeling, then Agra to see the Taj Mahal. Guess he's ticking off the 7 Wonders of the World on his travels. He has since flown to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates and then on to Egypt to see the Pyramids, SCUBA dive, ride a camel, see the Aswann Dam, etc. He called from around the world from time to time on SKYPE. Talked with him on 7-5-08. What a kick to be able to speak with him while he is on the other side of the world in Egypt. It was 10 a.m. his time and 12 a.m. my time. He then went to Madrid, Spain and stayed there a few weeks. He signed up for Spanish classes again (also in South America). He's still consitering whether to live and go to school there to study architecture or not. (I joined him in Europe for a few weeks of sightseeing.) In the meantime, I "lived and traveled" vicariously with him through his e-mails and blog spot. Check out my photos for some of the places he has visited this past year. Kevin, my older son, has a 17 year old Daughter, Alyssa, that I adore. I finished my Bachelors in 1995 at No. AZ Univ. I'm slow but tenacious! I work in the library there. I retired in 2005 from my 2nd job of 20 years as a store detective at a large retail store. It was very exciting but now I am enjoying having more free time. Just a few more years until I will also retire from NAU. My Sister, Roberta, lives nearby and we see each other often. Life is good. Hope that's true for you also. : ) charleene dot fell at nau dot edu School What a wonderful era we grew up in! And we were so lucky to attend a High School that had such an excellent football team that generated tremendous excitement and won the L.A. City Championship a few times too. Sports Nights were so much fun, and going on "poker runs", and to the drag strip, and the beach, and the Pike, and the Machado Pool and Long Beach Plunge, and drive-in movies. The Beach Boys music pretty well sets the mood for my memories of high school. What a carefree time and what a blast !!!! And what a great group of friends to share those times with. Thanks. College It seems as though I went to college forever. I really did drag it out over 30 years or so while working full time plus. I just continually took more and more classes until it finally added up to a degree. My motto is "perseverance pays". I'm getting the urge to take more classes too.....the proverbial "perpetual student"....
