Charlene's Story

What this site doesn't have in the Q&A section is an 'other' option in their categories as well as what did you do while in school. Where's the section on remodeling & diy projects or does the sports category include NHRA, NASCAR, tractor pulls, wild horse roundups? Surely I can't be the only one that reads a name which may 'ring a bell' but not remember for what reason. In high school I played the violin, was in the orchestra and was 'Co-captain' of the first year of the band flag team and was in the choir for a couple of years. I don't even know if the school still has a flag team now, after all it's only been 30 years. The house I grew up in was on a dead-end street and I could cut through that field and walk over (but I usually rode my brand new 10 speed green Schwinn girl's bike with my best friend then, Denise Pitts) to the riding stable. Dad bought an orange '72 Plymouth Roadrunner and would 'peel-out' every morning to work, much to the neighborhood's boys delight. The Brandon's lived across the street and Steve & I would get into the worst fights, he ran over Mom's new oak tree sapling with his bike, I pulled out a fistfull of hair from his head on the school bus . . . ahhh memories. My car which I drove my jr. & sr. year (remember when we had to go through the driver ed. course?) was a cherry red '66 Mustang. What I would give to get that used $600 car back now huh? My first job was at the local McDonald's, yep the one right on the main cruise strip. I started there my Soph. year (the mgr. lied & said that I was 16 even though my birthday wasn't for another 8 mos.) Now, does that help jog some memories? Instead of going to the riding stables like in the 'old' days, I have my own ranch In Wyoming. I still pick up the violin from time to time, but the times are getting further apart. So much easier physically and on the ears to turn on the player piano. I did continue schooling after a few transfers from Central Mo. State, to Virg. Tech. ended and graduated from University of California - Davis with a masters in mathematics. I...Expand for more
then joined the highway patrol as a pursuit officer - Yah I know, I heard it all "Officer Law". My degree came in handy calculating the difference between the posted limit and the actual speed I guess. Actually I attempted to go into genetic research, but could never stomach through the lab work and settled with the only course I could 'count' on. After several years and one too many close encounters I resigned from the department & moved to Wyoming with daughter in tow to be closer to my mother. Currently, I run 3 automotive franchises in addition to wildlife rescue & rehabilitation. My daughter graduated from Colorado State and is an elementary school teacher in Burns, WY. She is now engaged to a high school math teacher here in Cheyenne and is planning a wedding for next summer. (Donations are now being excepted ;) I did finally settle down, bought some acreage, a few horses, more land, more horses, etc. Then sold most of the horses, kept the land and married a FAA field technician a few years back. I miss all the trees & lakes that Mo. offers, then again I don't miss the bugs & humidity that accompanies them. Here in Wyoming we see things that most folks never get to see. Like a double or triple rainbow that stretches across the entire sky with both ends visible so you know where to dig for that pot of gold. We have a hot tub outside we use all year long at night to stare into the heavens and watch the shooting stars or the snow flakes drifting down in front of the white-capped mountains. Coyotes will serenade us while meadowlarks & killdeer join in the chorus. Fox kits giving chase to one another in the front yard, antelope, elk & buffalo siluetted against an open range, an evening's silence broken by a lone cry from a lynx, the airport closing runways again because of a wandering moose or bear. Instead of reading an authour's words in a western novel, we have the priviledge of living them everyday. I hope that each of you have found or will find your own piece of heavens' blessing in whichever form of life it is to you as I have.
