Charlene's Story

My early career spanned 18 years with California State in many positions, the last being a legislative analyst. I got divorced in 1978 and continued my spiritual search for the meaning of life and moved to Hawaii with my 18 year old daughter, where I co-owned a large upscale restaurant/lounge until the tourist-oriented economy bottomed out. Being an adventurous soul, I moved to Alaska and worked as an office manager in the Alaska Kidney Center, until I realized I desparately need to be where the sun shines regularly, and moved back to California. Took a position in Santa Barbara as a Personnel Mgr, for the man who was to become my future husband. At the time, Syd was the CEO of a large international water purification/desalination company that built city-size plants around the world. After two years, I resigned my position. Being an avid reader and seeker of knowledge, I started up a spiritual/metaphysical bookstore in San Diego where Syd's company also had facilities. After several years, I received an offer I couldn't refuse and sold the bookstore. Syd and I moved to Southern Colorado where we built our dream home. Syd started and headed up an International Business Consulting Firm there, while I authored two published spiritual books, took up quilting and learned to be a lady of leisure for the first time in my life. We traveled the world and after 12 years in Colorado my healt...Expand for more
h forced us to sell our dream home, and return to sea level in the Sacramento Valley in California. My lungs could not tolerate the high (7000') altitude. Neither of us really ever retired. Syd is still doing consulting work on a smaller scale. For many years, I had a successful online bookstore where I sold spiritual books and related articles, mostly of Eastern philosophy. Since I 'retired', I took a wide variety of art classes, (all forms of painting and drawing to hand-built clay objects) to enhance my creative nature. I'm now working with hot fused Dichroic glass creating all forms of jewelry and other art forms, with great success in sales. Other than that, we spend our time in our organic vegetable garden, reading, meditating and enjoying time with our family, friends and our precious two little doggies, Daisy and Chico. I am also a member of the local Gem and Mineral Society, and particpate in rock hounding ventures with friends. I'm too busy having fun now, and am making up for all the years I had to work to support my children and myself. One thing I must confess is that I never actually graduated with the SSH Class of 1957. I got married at the beginning of the Senior year, and moved to Alameda where my husband was stationed, and I graduated from Encinal Sr. High in the class of 1957. My heart always remained with my classmates and teachers at Sacramento Senior High.
