Charles's Story
Life
Married to a great lady - Lynn, I have one son and two grandsons. Now retired and living in Hammonton, NJ. In school, I was a really dorky kid from Laurel Springs. After 8 years at St. Lawrence, I went on to Collingswood High for which I was not prepared and from where I never graduated. I moved over to Camden County Vocational Schools until when, thinking that I knew it all, I dropped out and joined the Navy SeaBees. Boy! ... talk about a rude awakening. Since then, as Sinatra says, "I've been a pirate, a poet, a pawn and a king." - currently king, living large and happily! How about you?
School
Whether in St. Lawrence, Collingswood or Camden County VoTech, I didn't do well in school as I aways seemed to be distracted by flights of fancy or as it was called then "day dreaming."
At St. Lawrence most of the nuns were OK, but a few like Sister Teresa Joseph were a real monsters. I think she was possessed by demons or something. I remember schoolmates with great love as I picture them through the rose-colored glasses of my youth. Remember in Catholic schools "girls are good, boys are bad!"
At Collingswood Jr. High I loved art class as taught by Mr. Cherry. Mr. Kurkian never did get me to learn Algebra. It's funny how things work out. Because of Mr. Cherry, art is part of my second career today. The funny part of this story is that high-level math skills which I never mastered in school, were an intricate part of my everyday life in the world of computer sciences. Who'd-a-thunk it??
My school life taught me this:
1.) You are what you are only for the moment, and you don't have to stay that way.
2.) If you can dream it, you can do...Expand for more
it if you ignore what others say and remain persistent.
3.) If you follow steps 1 & 2, you will have a quality of life that others can only envy today.
