Charles's Story

Biographical Information Charles M. Baldwin PhD CChem FRSC Charles M. Baldwin was born in Pietown, New Mexico, a small town on the Continental Divide in western New Mexico. He grew up in New Mexico and Texas graduating as valedictorian of Midlothian High School in 1958. He earned a Presidential Scholarship to the University of Corpus Christi (now Texas A&M at Corpus Christi, Texas) where in 1962 he was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree with a major in chemistry and a minor in English. After three years as field chemist and safety director with the South Texas Division of Halliburton Company and one year teaching physics and mathematics at Springlake-Earth High School in the Texas panhandle, he enrolled in the Graduate School of Texas Tech University with a Robert A. Welch Fellowship in chemistry. In 1970 Mr. Baldwin received the Ph.D. in physical organic chemistry completing his work on the p-semidine rearrangement and hydrazo-aromatic photochemistry under the guidance of Professor Henry J. Shine, Horn Professor of Chemistry. He joined the faculty of Union University in 1970 until 1981 when he returned to Texas to care for family suffering from Alzheimer's Disease and stroke. During this time he taught at Howard Payne University, where he also served as Chair of the Division of Physical Sciences and Mathematics and Assistant Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1983 he assumed a position as Professor of Physical Science at Wayland Baptist University, and later was Visiting Lecturer at Baylor University (Summer, 1988). In the Fall, 1988 Professor Baldwin returned to Union University as Chair of the Department of Chemistry/Physics working toward the goal of building a high performance teaching team that prepares students to excel in careers centered in the chemical sciences. Baldwin lived in London during the academic year 1994-95 while he was a Visiting Academic at Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine. he spring of 2011, Baldwin retired from teaching but remains active professionally as University Fellow and Professor Emeritus at Union University and a STEM education advocate statewide and nationally.. Dr. Baldwin has served as President of the Jackson-Old Hickory Rotary Club (1992-93), where he has been recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow (6th Level). He was Chair of the Rotary District 6760 Scholarship Committee (2005-2010). He is Past-President (1996-97) of the Jackson Symphony Association and was made an Honorary Life-time Member of the Jackson Symphony Board. He is also a member of the Institutional Review Board of the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. He is Past-President of the Tennessee Science Teachers Association (2003-04) and Past-Chair of the Kentucky Lake ACS Section (2004), and served two 3-year terms as Alternate Councilor. Dr. Baldwin served as Chair of the SOCED Task Force on Undergraduate Programming at National Meetings (2009-2011), associate member of the ACS Committee on Education and was founding Faculty Advisor to the Union University ACS Student Chapter (1995-2011). Dr. Baldwin served two 3-year terms as Councilor of the Kentucky Lake ACS Section (2011-2017) and on the national ACS Committee on Education (2012-2017), He was also the founding president of the Jackson-West Tennessee Tennis Association (2009-2016) which catalyzed the construction of a new 10-court public tennis complex. Other boards on which he serves or has served include the Tennessee Science Teachers Association, YMCA of Jackson, Tree Board of Jackson, Jackson-Madison County Public Library Board, the Keep Jackson Beautiful Commission, and the International Science and Engineering Fair Advisory Council (1990-93). In a ceremony on September 23, 2022, Charles M. Baldwin was inducted into the Bicentennial Hall of Honor at Union University. The Hall of Honor was established during the 200th anniversary of the founding of Union University and is a permanent recognition of those of outstanding ability who have rendered distinguished service and devotion to Union University by embodying its core values and mission.
