Charles Bernal:

CLASS OF 1979
Fresno, CA

Charles's Story

After I graduated from Roosevelt in 1979 I went into the US Navy for 4 years and 2 years reserve. I got out and went directly to Fresno State with the goal of becoming a psychologist but being around the Sigma Chi fraternity did not help my GPA much. But I was overseas 31/2 years out of the 4 active duty years I did. (I guess I wanted to experience American life as an adult since I experienced with about 15 other difference countries. Dropping out of State in fall semester of 1987 to just work at various jobs became my goal because I had not been without a steady check, and had met my first wife in 1984 and married by 1986.. I did not stay out long, for I was back in by 1991 this time at Fresno City to get all the General Ed. out of the way and transfer my units to State.. Graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in the Spring of 1994. By this time I had two children and thought of applying my new English degree to law,. I worked for the Public Defenders office for 4 years up to August 1998 transferring to Central Services the same year within the County. In which time I thought about becoming a teacher. ...Expand for more
I started as a Substitute Teacher in April 2001 for Fresno Unified. I did 10 years as a Substitute within that time period I had joined the Army National Guard as a reservist soldier who were recruiting with large bonuses. At the same time I was in the Credential Program at Fresno State. I was called up for active duty for the regular army 2005, so I had to put many things on hold. Iraq and Afghanistan were going hard core. I was sent as a Sergeant with a Force Protection Unit to Afghanistan, and after 16 months on active duty I was released to the Reserves May 1, 2007, only to be reactivated 19 June 2007. I was sent traveling again with a different Infantry Unit. But the Army released me due to injuries sustained on my first tour. I was released to the Reserves once more and lasted with them till 2011 in which time I was designated 100% disabled veteran by 2012. Well in the mean time being 100% force me out of teaching and other future plans I had. My dear wife has passed back in March 2018 of pancreatic cancer now and I go on as is. Well that's been my life so far up to this point. Charles Bernal
