Charles's Story
after graduation i spent the summer in the dc area then matriculated to the virginia military institute. after completion of my freshman year i transferred to the university of texas in austin. christmas and summer breaks i spent in athens greece where my father was stationed at the time ( working for aafes ). took a year off from college and went to hawaii where my father had been transferred. learned how to body surf at sandy beach and then makapu point. was a courier while there, driving around the island. rough job! also saw a major rock concert every week. back to austin for more college but not being a serious student i embarked upon a journery into the us navy. boot camp and some follow-up schools in san diego, where i had a great time. found la jolla and blacksbeach where did more body surfing. and answered the question of where the hell la jolla was from the old beach boys song. more navy schools in orlando, for nuclear training, ( did disney world, saw space launches, traveled to key west, had to see what hemingway saw ), more schooling in connecticut, hands on nuclear training, ( traveled around the new england area on my 4 day off time )
eventually ended up in charleston, sc for fbm ( fleet ballistic submarine ) duty. normally missle subs stay out at sea, but was lucky enough to pull into lisbon on 1 patrol and rotterdam on another. sub was mostly out of holy locke scotland but didnt have much time to see anything but edinburgh. after 4 years transferred to the puget sound ad-38, a destroyer tender, stationed in gaeta, italy. worked on surface ships. 2 weeks in home port, 2 weeks in foreign port. saw barcelona, palma de majorca, malaga, toulon, ville de france, marseille, athens, izmir, alexandria, trieste, dubrovnick, jafia and naples. having lived in overseas i took advantantage of the area and became culturally over...Expand for more
dosed with museums, cathedrals, pyramids and good portion of the holy lands. back to charleston for another submarine, then a sub tender thru the yards in charleston and passcagula, mississippi. a sub thru the yards in charleston and then final tour of the uss enterprise thru the yards in newport news, virginia. saw a lot of dc, baltimore and the patomac area. retired in 95 and moved back to the low country to give my kids roots of some kind that most of us militray/overseas brats never had. residing in mount pleasant, sc i worked for my unlce and became a custom cabinet maker until the company folded in early 2008 due to various reasons. during this time i got married, had three kids, 2 girls and a boy. finally listened to my kids and got divorced in 2007, couldnt handle the alcohol and drugs on her part any longer, but did make it thru 27 years. currently single, working part time for barnes and noble while i rework the house from top to bottom prior to selling it, part of the divorce agreement. after that i have no clue, lol. thinking about moving to someplace i have never seen before. older 2 girls are out on their own, 1 is married with 2 kids, yes i have grandkids, the other living in alexandria. the last one, my son, started college at univ of sc. i have been extremely lucky overall in my fortunes of seeing so much of the world and the states. my three kids are great, and we talk weekly or more often, one of the great benefits of cell phones and a family plan.
i look back with fondness at my year in madrid. though i was only there for my senior year it was still fun and i often wonder what/where the class of 71 ended up. i see from classmates that we are distributed across the u.s. i will be posting some pictures soon. it would be great to hear from anyone of the class, wether i knew you well or not. take care and good luck.
