Charles's Story
Hello, 1981 and others. I'm a court reporter in the Cook County court system. Crime does pay. So far I haven't seen any 1981 alumni convicted of murder, which is a good sign; however, I did have Paul Runge, Oak Forest's *VERY OWN* serial killer/rapist in court. Also Andrew Urdiales, another South Side serial killer (8 victims) who had two Oak Forest residents as defense witnesses--now who on earth from Oak Forest would have him as a friend? And there's R. Kelly, the sex offender/child pornographer from nearby Olympia Fields. Aren't we lucky to have such quality people nearby? I knew those two years of typing in high school were good for something, but FOUR years of gym? Speaking of gym, I miss the days of shirts and skins line basketball, especially when Mr. Loess was my neighbor. He's since moved to Michigan, probably making people do the bear crawl there, too. He was as charming and warm and fuzzy as he was in high school. In the 10 years we were neighbors, I don't think he spoke one syllable to me; however, I did feel compelled to do the bear crawl when I take out my garbage and play shirts & skins line lawn mowing. The entire P.E. Department needed therapy. A huge new library was built on the school facing Central. NOW they get a new library...Expand for more
with bells and whistles and what'd WE have? The Learning Center with the charming Reiplinger & Fronczak, who were busy kicking our asses out of there. I mean, God forbid you'd actually try to learn in there. And thanks for reading! Great seeing everyone at our 20-year reunion in 2001. Brought back some terrific memories. I do miss those days and can't believe how time flew. Can you believe we're almost 60, class of 1981?!. (Edited 06-12-2022)
Workplace
First "real" job while in high school was at Carson Pirie Scott-Orland Square from 1980-1994. It overlapped with my now real-real job as a court reporter and decided I like having weekends off instead of selling men's clothing until ungodly late hours on week nights and weekends because it was some stupid super-duper sale.
But my first job was at The Original Pancake house, still there at 159th & Laramie. I was a dishwasher/busboy and hated it big time, so I quit after a few months. That was sophomore year, 1979.
So now I get to listen to all sorts of criminals and abusive parents and hear all the wonderful things they do to people, none of them pretty, but that's the nature of crime in Chicago. Been a court reporter since 1986. Knew typing class at Oak Forest High School was good for something...
