Charles's Story
After high school, I went to
Dekalb Tech for a two year accounting program and graduated in one year. Then I joined the Navy so I would not be drafted and get sent to Vietnam. Went to boot camp in Orlando and Radioman Class A school in Bainbridge Maryland and then got sent to Vietnam. I was at NSA Cat Lo and ATSB Go Dau Ha for my one year tour. Then I was assigned to Assualt Craft Unit 2 in Little Creek, Va. Got out of the Navy in 1972 and rejoined in 1973 and was assigned to the USS McCandless in Norfolk, Va. Then I went to the pre commissioning crew of the USS Arthur W Radford, commissioned her in Pasagula, Mississippi. Was on her for about a year and half and was then assigned to Cameron STation in Washington DC. There I applied for cross training as a Data Systems Technicain and went to school in Vallejo California, then C school in Denver, Coloradao and then to the USS John F Kennedy in N...Expand for more
orfolk, Virgiana. After I left the JFK I was assigned to run the school in Denver, Colorado where I met my wife Sarah. I left Denver for the USS John Rodgers in Charleston, SC did 2 years aboard her, then retired from the Navy in November 1990 and went to work for Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tn in December 1990 and am still here. I have an enormous title, Director of Computing for the College of Basic and Applied Science (They pay me to play with computers). My daughter Paivi was born in 1993. Paivi is a Finnish name, her grandmother and grandfather on her mothers side were both from Finland. Sarah's mother has lived here with us in Murfreesboro since 2001. I am looking forward to retiring again in about 7 more years. If I am working here at MTSU and Paivi goes to college in Tennessee, MTSU pays half her tuition. So once she graduates when she turns 22 I am retired again.
