Charles's Story

Charlie Corbin here, let me present a personal side of myself most people don,t read in general profiles. I was born in Gardena, California, but was brought up in Muskegon. I™m the oldest of four boys now and graduated from Muskegon Senior High in June of 1964. Joined the Navy in August of 1964 and after two years on a Navy Destroyer off the coast of Viet Nam I spent the other two cruising Europe. In the fall of 1968 I enrolled and graduated from MCC in 1970 and transferred to Ferris. After graduation I did my student teaching at Kalamazoo, Loy Norrix, and started teaching at Muskegon Heights High School in 1973-79. I married Rose Ann Firestone (MHS class of 1965) in 1969 and it was her work that took us throughout the country. I have taught at nine different schools, six different states and have had twenty five different jobs. All based on my wife, she was employment as a Rates and Tariffs Manager for GTE. We have two daughters, Stephanie is a medical claims attorney and Christina is a nanny. Rose contacted Pancreatic Cancer in 2010 and passed away in January of 2012. She is truly missed and I will say she was the smarted person I have ever had the pleasure to meet. My last job was with the Hampton City Schools in Virginia and retired in June of 2011. During that time I taught Communication Systems/Photography, Con...Expand for more
struction Technology and Production Systems to students 9-12. Most of my instructional time was spent working on Construction Projects. Adirondack chairs, modular sheds, wood bowls and collapsible work benches along with Photography projects. In the summer of 2009 I purchased the family home in Muskegon from my brother Pat. I have been repairing the old house the last couple of summers and in July of 2012 moved into the home on Larch where I was brought up as a kid. 'My grandfather came from Austria in 1906 and settled in Chicago with his brother. His grocery store failed and he settled in Muskegon in 1914. He fathered nine children, but only 4 lived. Doing my grandfathers time he got permission from Brunswick to farm the fields at the site where Muskegon Catholic Central is now and he worked his dairy farm for over thirty years until poor health ended his dairy farm. During his off time he would plant grapes in the surrounding areas. In the backyard of his former house and my aunts, now mine he planted concord and white grapes. They have been there since the fortys and I have been tending them for years. I will be the third generation to live in this home on 1177 W. Larch, which will mark a hundred years of our family living in this house in 2016. Thanks for reading my rendition of War and Peace. LOL Charlie Corbin
