Charles's Story
Life
Ive had a pretty exciting life being a firefighter for 24 1/2 years. Retired June 12, 2005 as Assistant Chief, Crystal Lake Fire Department Il. I can't seem to get out of Illinois except for a six year stint in Minneapolis.I had to move back to where it was warm. My wife was teaching didn't like it, and is now a teachers aide and loves it. To each their own. We moved to the Asheville NC area in July 2005. Didn't like it, moved back and presently live in Woodstock. My daughter is casting commercials works in the movies. My sons are great and have a great band. They're playing regularly in Chicago at Martyrs, Double Door etc. and in the Nw burbs. You can catch them at myspace.com/donrussian.
I seemed to hate high school when I was there but now remember it fondly. There were some special moments back then. Mostly football, rarely studies, and the only other thing, girls. A few memories come to mind at the moment.
First, there was the best football game I ever participated in. We beat Arlington Heights 11-0. It was a battle no, a rumble, at least on my side of the ball. I think that was the best game Ron M and I had. Second, the comeback game against Hers...Expand for more
ey where Guy Z. drew up the last TD play in the huddle.(am I right Guy?) Then there was the time I got my only A and in Algebra. Finally, I remember a date with the prettiest girl at Palatine. A one time affair listening to the Moody Blues over a bottle of fine wine.(Mogen David...what class.)We had a slow (please never end) dance. And at the end of the night I think I even kissed the prettiest girl at Palatine. Great memories. I wonder if kids today are fortunate enough to experience that kind of innocent fun. Hope so.
School
Never cared for school very much as some of you know. Made it through 2 years of college. I've taken many specialized college courses in fire science and medical sciences. Found those fairly interesting. But what I find most exciting is reading on my own. Guess I don't like much structure which is ironic considering the para-military job I have.
Workplace
Started life as a cook which in turn led to life as a meat cutter. My present job(24 1/2 years) is Assistant Chief, Fire Department. I was a paramedic for 17 years. If you are one or know someone who is you'll know what a long strange trip it can be. Retired June 9, 2005.
