Charles's Story
Life
I have taught for 43 years (band director). I was married for 39 years to the best friend I could ever have had. I lost her to cancer on Dec. 20, 2004. I have three children and 4 grandchildren. My two boys live in Phoenix and my daughter is with me. I I have taught in Friona (10 yr), Ft. Stockton (1yr), Muleshoe (4 yr), Clovis, NM (21yr), Monahans (1 yr), Amarillo (4 yrs.) and Los Alamos, NM for 2 years.
Mostly it has just been hard work for all these years with a little enjoyment thrown in. I have been fortunate enough to be in the Tournament of Roses Parade, the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade in New York, and the Hollywood Christmas Parade with bands. I also managed, booked, ran sound, and was chief roadie for my sons'rock band (Metal Rose) for about 11 years. They played in 9 states and were very close to the "big time" several times. We feel that the Lord closed those doors for us. When we hear of some of the tragedies in the lives of those that did make it big----.
Professionally, I am very proud that I was voted "Music Educator of the Yea...Expand for more
r" for the New Mexico Music Educators in 2000. I moved back to Texas to help my wife reach her retirement. She became ill in 2003 and was not able to teach. I greatly miss someone that I spent almost every day with for 40 years.
I retired 3 yrs ago and moved to Albuquerque. Presently, I serve as a mentor for the Albuquerque Public Schools Fine Arts for teachers new to the system in their first 2 years in band and orchestra. It keeps me involved with bands and does not have the pressure of competitions and the discipline issues..
I have lasted so long in this business because of the great kids I have dealt with. I maintain contact with many on Facebook and enjoy hearing what the future we used to tell them about has brought them. People that have physically seen me, tell me that I haven't changed that much. The Friona people would probably be amazed to see that I have a white beard. I know that I have changed because I look at this mug in the mirror every morning, but I still like being around good kids and remembering the ones from the past.
