Charles's Story

College After graduating from Perry Baptist High School in Michigan I attended Liberty Baptist College for one year on a tuition scholarship as an English Education major. That was the only year I attended full time. I didn't resume college until many years later as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps. I took American Government while I was stationed in Iwakuni, Japan the first time through University of Maryland's asian campus. I then transferred to Yuma, AZ. where I took Intermediate Algebra and ENG101 at Arizona Western College in 1996. I was stationed stationed in Havelock, NC from 2003 until February 2008, and attended classes regularly at Park University based out of Parkville, MO. I graduated, Magna Cum Laude, on May 13, 2012 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management/Logistics. I earned a Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management at New York University, graduating in May 2017. Workplace 1983-1984: Ypsilanti Free Press in Ypsilanti, MI. 1984-1988: Served on active duty in the U.S. Navy, primarily as a Quartermaster aboard the submarine USS Sunfish, SSN 649 based in Charleston, SC. 1988-2011: Served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps. My primary occupation was aviation electronics technician working on deceptive electronic countermeasures systems used in the F/A-18 Hornet and A/V-8B Harrier fixed wing aircraft. I spent three years turning young civilian boys into Marines as a Drill Instructor (DI) from October 1997 until November 2000. I served as the Adjutant and Avionics Lead Instructor for the aviation maintenance school command at MCAS Cherry Point in coastal North Carolina. I spent my last four years as a First Sergeant on independent duty in Brooklyn, NY and retired on 1 March 2011. Military 1. Feb. 1984 to Feb. 1988: USN Quartermaster on USS Sunfish submarine. 2. Aviation Electronics Technician School at Naval Air Station (NAS) Millington in Memphis, TN. >Mar. - June 1989: MOS school at NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, VA. >July 1989 to July 1993: Stationed at MCAS El Toro in Irvine, CA. Unit assigned to was Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron (MALS) 11. Promoted to Corporal (Cpl) on 1 April 1992. Promoted to Sergeant (Sgt) on 1 June 1993. >July 1993 to July 1994: Stationed at Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS) Iwakuni, Japan. Unit assigned to was MALS-12. >Aug. 1994 to June 1997: Stationed at MCAS Yuma, AZ. Unit assigned to was MALS-13. Completed one 6 month deployment to Japan from Nov. 1996 to May 1997. >July to Sep. 1997: Attended Drill Instructor (DI) school at MCRD San Diego, CA. >Oct. 1997 to Nov 2000: Trained recruits to become U. S. Marines at MCRD San Diego, CA. Promoted to Staff Sergeant (SSgt) on 1 Nov. 1998. Worked 4 platoons as a Junior DI; 3 platoons as a Senior DI; and 10 months at Receiving Barracks, which is the unit that initially processes the new recruits when they first arrive. >Nov. 2000 to Nov. 2003: Stationed at MCAS Iwakuni, Japan. Unit assigned to was MALS-12. Served as the Deceptive Electronic Countermeasures (DECM) work center supervisor. Promoted to the rank of Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt) on 1 Jan. 2002. >Dec. 2003 to Feb. 2007: Stationed at MCAS Cherry Point in Havelock, NC. Unit assigned to is the Center for Naval Aviation Technical Training (CNATT) where Marines are trained in their job specialty before they are reassigned to their first operational force unit. I served as the Adjutant and Aviation Electronics Division Chief Instructor. Frocked to the rank of First Sergeant (1stSgt) on 1 Feb. 2007. >Feb. 2007 to Mar. 2011: Stationed in Brooklyn, NY assigned to 6th Communication Battalion as the I & I First Sergeant. Retired from the USMC after 27 years of service. >Mar. 2011 to June 2012: Lived near Seattle, WA. >Sep. 2012 to present: Reside in the NYC borough of Queens.
