Charles's Story

Life Went in the Army after working for a year. Spent a year and a half on Taiwan before reenlisting and coming back to New Jersey for school. Went to Germany for a few months before being recalled to Fort Gordon and then on to Viet Nam in 1966. Did two tours there, with a break assignment in Arizona and a couple of temporary trips to Viet Nam as an instructor. Have worked delivering beer, as a security guard and as a revenue officer in Colorado before starting with the Department of Defense. Have been working for them for the past 34 years. Now looking forward to retirment. Was lucky enough to photograph some friends in a Motocross race in 1980 and, after seeing some of my work, started taking pictures at NASCAR tracks in the South East. Have had the honor to call many of the greats (and not so greats) friends. Have now retired, moved back to Colorado and hooked up with a friend I met in Taichung. We followed each other around, while in the service, and became great friends. Live about as far away from him, now, as the Hostel was from their house in Taiwan. Well, that lasted almost 6 years. Old friends come and go and he went. Still live in the same town, but we no longer speak to each other. Have no idea why he shut me out. His loss, not mine.. School First school was Machon, in Swampscot MA. Don't remember much about it. It was a long time ago. Moved to Wilmington MA and went to the Walker school. Made some friends there, a few I remember. The Fuller brothers, the fire chief's son, Ann, the girl that lived behind us. Moved to New Hampshire and enjoyed life a little more. Didn't like getting up early to cut wood (yes, we still had a wood stove) and to catch the bus. But the Moore school was an interesting stay. Was more active in school functions. A short trip to Lynn, in 1954 and then on to Hale High in Stow. There, I had problems. Made some friends and enemy’s. I wonder if they still remember me? Loved the house at the lake, but it was a long walk to the bus stop and not always a pleasant ride. Missed a lot of school, really tried to do my best, but didn't have any luck and lost a year. That brought me to Newton and my three year stay there. Grades improved and I really enjoyed it. Didn't graduate with honors, but I did graduate with good grades! Have to take my hat off to the teachers, that took an interest in me, and my friends, who supported me. No time for enemy’s there! Didn't go on to collage, right away. Worked in...Expand for more
West Newton, for a while, then the service. But that's another Bio! College Took a few courses at USC-Pueblo. Took mostly business courses, along with a little history and even a Psychology course. (Imagine me taking a course like that!) Didn't stay long. GI bill wasn't that much, then, and money didn't go far enough to pay for everything. Had to quit and get a job. Never did go back. Probably could have used that Psychology course! Workplace What haven't I done? Worked a couple of low tech jobs in Newton MA before moving back to Rhode Island and working for Raytheon. Then came the Army. Finished that, after 8 years and moved to Colorado. Delivered beer for the first few months, then worked as a security guard at the DOT test site. Moved on to work with the state at the Port of Entry in Limon. Left there in 1973 to work for my uncle (Sam). That took me to North Dakota, Wyoming, St Louis and, after a short break to find myself (and discovered I wasn't lost!) to Fort Bragg NC, where I stayed for a little over 20 years. In September, 2004, retired and moved back to Colorado. I guess you can't go home again! Military Took basic at Fort Dix in the winter of 1962. Oh what fun that was! How I managed to get through that, I don't know. Guess it was the First Shirt! He stood about five foot 2 and wore about a size 18 boot! (Well, maybe not that big, but you didn't want to make him mad!) He pushed everyone and we all made it through. On to Fort Monmouth for Microwave school. Another adventure. That lasted 28 weeks and got an assignment on Taiwan. Mis-communications caused me to be delayed in Oakland for a month and I missed the boat going over. (Shucks) Had to fly. Spent 63-65 working out of Taichung, Chi-Yi and Taipei. Had more assignments there than the rest of the time I was in the Army! Re-enlisted and went back to Fort Monmouth for COMSEC. Another adventure. Hooked up with a kid I knew in Taichung and had a fantastic time there. He went to Fort Huachuca and I ended up in Germany. Short tour, because of Viet Nam. Got reassigned to Fort Gordon, he got Viet Nam. Short tour at Gordon and I was in Viet Nam. Central Highlands, not the R&R assignment at Cam Rhan Bay he had. Did a tour and a half there, then back to the states. Fort Huachuca (friend was out, now). A couple of TDY trips in the states and one back to Viet Nam before reassignment to Qui Nhon in 1970. Finished out my Army obligation there and got out New Years Eve of 1970.
