Charles's Story

I thought that I would finally take some time and reveal a little about myself. After graduating high school, I attended Cameron University (it was actually named Cameron State Agricultural College at that time) for a year and a half. I probably spent more time in the Student Union playing snooker than class and grades started slipping. All of this was during the Vietnam War era and I found out that I was coming up as number one on the draft list for the area. I decided to enter the U.S. Navy on the deferred enlistment plan in order to finish out the semester. I completed boot camp in San Diego and then Hospital Corps School. At that time it was about every other class that was assigned to the Fleet Marines and our class was due. Well, there was a big push to increase troops to Vietnam and they assigned 2 classes in a row for assignment to the Marines and our class drew stateside assignments. Twenty-one of us in our class was assigned to Naval Hospital Oakland. I must say that it was good times living in the San Francisco Bay area. My initial assignment was for four years and when it came time for reenlistment decision, I opted to get out and stayed in the Bay area. The job situation at the time was tough and after 6 months, I enlisted again and this time it was with the Air Force. My first assignment was Brooks AFB in San Antonio working on projects with NASA. After one year at Brooks I received orders to the USAF Hospital Wiesbaden Germany. I spent four years there and it was a great assignment. I made the most of it with travelling Europe. Great times! My next assignment was USAF Hospital, Nellis AFB, NV. Living in Las Vegas was something else. I completed a relative short tour there and then received an assignment to the hospital at the United States Air Force Academy. I have a lot of great memor...Expand for more
ies with this assignment. My next assignment was Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio where I was Superintendent of the Otolaryngology Clinic. I finally received one of the assignments I had always wanted and that was Course Supervisor for US Navy/USAF bi-service school training both Navy and Air Force personnel as Otolaryngology technicians. After completing a four year tour there, I was reassigned to the hospital at Keesler AFB, MS. I spent two years there and decided it was time to hang up the spurs and retire in 1990. Upon retiring, I began work as a buyer for the Singing River Hospital System in Pascagoula, MS. One year into retirement from the Air Force, I was recalled to active duty in support for Operation Desert Storm. After discharge, I went back to work at Singing River Hospital. After about 3 years with Singing River, I went to work in the computer business in the Biloxi area. From there I took a position as a sales rep for a Japanese manufacturing firm covering Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama. Later, I took a position as corporate sales rep in St. Louis covering a seven state area. There was a lot of traveling and time in the air. I later opted to move to Georgia and take a regional position with the same firm. After that stint, we moved to the Panama City, FL area where I worked in different industries. Due to failing health of my parents, we moved to Lawton, OK to be closer to them. While here I have worked as tech support for a wireless ISP and property manager for a local real estate firm. Now that I am totally retired, it is now time to move back south to enjoy life and be closer to the grandkids. So there you have it in a nutshell. Throughout my life up to this point I believe I have been fortunate to have wonderful assignments and have been blessed in all that has happened.
