Charles's Story
I joined the United State Navy after graduation from high school following in the footsteps of my five older brothers, Robert, Jerry, (Korean War Veterans), Vietnam Veterans include brothers, David, Warren, Richard and myself My brothers and myself U.S. Naval Service spans twenty years. I enlisted in the U.S. Navy shortly after graduation from high school and was sent to boot camp for three months in San Diego, California, followed by five months of US Navy Electrical Schools also on the US Naval Basse, San Diego. After graduation from the Electrical Schools, I was ordered to the East Coast at the Norfolk, Virginia US Naval Base to attend more US Naval Base Schools for another three months. was then ordered to the Boston (Massachusetts) Naval Shipyard to become a Crew Member of the USS PENSACOLA LSD-38, which had not been commissioned yet, but was commissioned as part of the US Navy Fleet on March 27, 1971. The Commissioning Ceremony was an exciting time for me. As an Electrician, my job gave me access to every inch on the USS Pensacola LSD-38 so Naval life for me on my new assignment was never boring. The first cruise of the USS Pensacola was “shakedown” training out in the at sea near Guantanamo Bay Naval Base for “Fleet (Battle Station) Training” for the next ten months, after which the ship returned to “Dry Dock” at Little Creek, Virginia for inspection and necessary repairs.
