Charles's Story

Life Life since high school can be best described as a snowball rolling downhill. I went straight into college out of high school and graduated with a bachelors in business administration. I worked part-time while in college, but when into full time afterwards. I finally moved out of my parent's house in June of 2005 after a few years of saving up some money. I was out on my own for 6-months when it hit me. I went to the doctor one Friday afternoon complaining of a cough and congestion. They took a chest x-ray and immediately told me to go to the ER. Long story short, there was a mass in my chest. An oncologist was called in and a bone marrow biopsy performed. The results came back Acutre Lymphoblastic Leukemia. For the past 7 months, I've been undergoing aggressive chemo therapy and radiation treatments, and I'm happy to report that the treatments have been a success. I've been considered to be in remission since my first round of chemo back in January. The mass in my chest even vanished. That snowball I called life crashed for me when I went into the hospital. I've been in and out since January getting treatments, and unfortunately the cure has been almost as bad as the disease. I will admit though, that this has been a life changing experience for me. I've learned that there are some i...Expand for more
ssues in life that are too petty to be worrisome over, while there are more important things. One of the most important things I've discovered is the love of my friends. I can't explain how much my friends have helped me through this ordeal. I'll admit, I never had many friends back in school. I was the guy everyone knew about, whether by rumor or joke-of-the-day, and I had associates and colleagues being a member of the band and all. But to be honest, I can't think of one person from high school who I could categorize as the type of friend I've been blessed with today. And that got me thinking of another thing. I wondered just how everyone from school was doing. Who has been married? Has kids? Built their lives and accomplishments? I may not have been able to consider anyone friends, but that doesn't mean I don't wonder. So, if you've read this far, I can only guess you were either bored out of your gourd or you have a passing interest in the nerd of the class of 1998. Whether you decide to send me a message of hello or not, I just want you to know that I have thought a lot of those people I knew in school, and I hope that life has been good for you these last 8 years. And I also wish you the best of luck in life for the future. Never forget what's important to you, and never take it for granted.
