Charles's Story

Living in North Huntingdon Pennsylvania. After 36 years of service, I retired from the Allegheny Intermediate Unit [June-06] . I taught special education and was a guidance counselor for mentally handicapped students. I coached high school football at Wilkinsburg, Springdale, Norwin, West Mifflin and football/baseball at East Allegheny High Schools. With the tremendous help from my assistant coaches and blessed with super talent, East Allegheny High School won WPIAL "AAA" sectional baseball titles [84 & 85], was the 3rd place team [84], the 4th.place team [85] in the WPIAL baseball tournament, respectively, and achieved the 2nd. round of the 1984 PIAA baseball tournament. My children are grown and attended Norwin High School. Daughter, Nichol, graduated fron Dickinson College, M.Ed. from Cabrinni College. She is also a teacher and girls lacrosse coach. Currently, she is a stay home mom, caring for my 2 grandchildren, Delaney and Campbell. Nichol and her husband Ralph [met in college] moved from Vermont and now live in Philadelphia, PA. Ralph is Vice-President, Price-Waterhouse, in charge of their public utilities division. My son, Christopher, a graduate of Temple Medical School, is a resident physician at Heritage Valley Hospital in Beaver, Pennsylvania. He received his BS from Cornell University, where he played strong safety. Met my wife, Loretta, while in college. She recently retired from East Allegheny School District [June-08] as a math specialist after 35 years of service. This August we'll be married 42 years. During my years at DTHS, I was a 4 year letterman in football, 3 in basketball and 4 in track. During the summer, I also played Little/Pony/Colt League Baseball. I held our high school discus and shotput records for 3 years until Jim "Bubby" Braxton broke them. In my senior year, I was named to the PA Big"33" honerable mention team, and 2nd team All-WPIAL class "B". If I had to do things o...Expand for more
ver again, I would have finished doctorate degree [all academic work and research completed, gathering dust on mybookcase] taken high school academics more seriously, not 'clowned' around so much and been a better person to my classmates. I'm very sure that I surprise everyone who knew me in high school to know that I had enough intelligence to achieve a BS from Clarion University and receive a Masters of Education from Slippery Rock University. Following graduation from DTHS, I played football at Tarkio College, Missouri. With help from Coach Tom Sankovich, I transfered to University of Maryland. Worked my way up to play right guard on their first scout team. This team would run the plays of the up coming opponent in a live game situation against the first team defense. After a serious injury to my left knee I knew my opportunity to to continue playing Division I football were over. Called DTHS coaches at that time, they put me in contact with and a former DTHS gradate,[David Griffin,PhD ] who was playing basketball at Clarion. With all their help, I enrolled in at Clarion.[Sept.66]. Because of NCAA rules back then I was ineligibile to play. When I became eligible [Jan.-67] I started at right guard on the football team from 1967-70. Very fortunate to be receive All-PSAC honors [68-and-69]. During those years, I played in 2 PSAC Championship games against West Chester University. Loretta and I spend most of our time visiting our children and grandchildren. I like to read historical accounts about The American Revolution and Civil War, listen to the "oldies" and classical music, watch classic movies from the 30's,40's and 50's. Currently, serve as a founding member of Clarion's Alumni Football Association and alumni committee member of Alpha Gamma Phi Fraterity. I'm really looking forward to re-connecting my fellow classmates of the Dunbar Twp. Mules, Clarion Golden Eagles and Tarkio Owls.
