Charles's Story

I moved to Tampa, Fl in the fall of '71, after dropping the usual method for getting out of high school. Polished off two years of academia in three months, passed the GED at Greenville TECH, and travelled on. Five years in the sunshine state left me in a spin. The energy crisis cost me my job, home, and woman. Headed for Columbia in '76, and took a position in an auto shop. By '79, I moved up to a local dealer so I could get some education on Mercedes, Volvo, Toyota, and Rolls Royce. I've fixed junk from raggedy to opulence, and I'm good at it, even in these mind boggling computer networked times. Grease has been good to me, but back issues from long hard years has precluded my ability to make it as a tech. I'm management now, with a great crew, in a respected shop near the USC campus. I've stayed in and around the "Soda City" area for the last thirty-two years. I like the central location, since I can't decide on wheather the beach, or the mountains are best. My permanent home is near Winnsboro, on three acres, cleared and civilized from a stand of hardwoods. I left...Expand for more
most of the trees standing, except for 3/4 of an acre that comprises my yard. I figured that was enough to mow. More times than not, I spend my weeks in Colatown, and retreat to my country abode on the weekends. Despite a bulging disc, I remain active in outdoor pursuits. Deer and turkey hunting, fishing, camping, kayaking, and combinations of the above when possible. I have become aware that the alternative to all of this activity is slow, painful passing into the crippled old fart that is in my future. But I'd rather hurt from the effort to stay loose, than lie around in stiff agony. One merely modifies the program to suit capacity. It's that simple. I realized a long time ago, that one can never go back, but often wondered what became of some of the ghosts from my past. I was so transient in my youth, I lost track of everybody. Miles and time take their toll. So, for kicks and giggles, I decided to beef up this account and spread the word that I am a survivor. This is for for those of you I haven't stumbled into on the rare occassion. Those who are curious, too.
