Charlotte Weizer's Story

My Life at 70! Life for me is centered in Long Beach, CA. I live and worked in this town. I worked mainly at Long Beach City College, teaching political science for almost 40 years. I am so happy to be retired and not dealing with today’s political climate and online instruction. I admire those teaching in this changing environment. At LBCC, I met my husband Greg, a historian, who has a special expertise, the American automobile... especially muscle cars. Greg is still the collector and we have walls filled with early American clocks. Do not get involved with a historian. This is the man who gave me twins, car shows, clocks and NASCAR, what more could a woman want? Oh I forgot country music! Eric and Allison are our 30 year old twins. Eric is now working as a public policy analyst for a consulting firm where differing views are respected. He worked for some cities and decided city and county government are not for him. Allison started at UC Berkeley, spent time at Oxford, became ill and dropped out for over 5 years and returned to Scripps College to get 2 BA’s in Environmental Analysis and Psychology. She is now working with a nonprofit involved with international refugees. There are no marriages or grandchildren yet, but Eric is engaged to a wonderfully talented dynamo that expands his world. Being old parents isn't so bad, they keep us young and active. We have a wonderful dog Willow who is afraid of the world. People, kids, wind, leaves, bikes, cars, to name a few. She just is terrified of the outside world. We cheer for her to bark but she usually cowers. Our 65 pound girly is all love. Greg, my husband , is a very special friend and an amazing father. His health is a challenge for a person who always exercised and took care of himself. We live in a part of Long Beach, Bixby Knolls, that reminds me of where I lived in Alhambra. We like the character of the older houses, the small shops in the neighborhood and the diversity of the neighbors. My parents have now both passed away, pop at 92 and mom at 86. My sister, Ilene, class of '67, lives in Alhambra in my parents old home and works with my brother Ike. Ilene has faced tears of surgeries after a car accident injured so many parts. Ike (Issac), class of '69 is finally closed the old plumbing supply business started by my dad. The recession was really difficult on the business, as it was with some many other peoples' lives. But, he is not fully retired. I hope this finds you well. Thanks for catching up with my life. AHS Memories AHS holds wonderful memories for me...some good, some bad...Expand for more
, but all part of growing up and developing your character. My friendships are the lasting legacy.. Now many have died, but Janice Rabel Bennett, has been there since I was 10 and Pat Wong since our freshman year. At our 50 year reunion I reunited with Anne Marie Corey Secord. It is great to be back together. Dearest Holly Unland Dunn and of cousin Jeanne Silvio Chamberlain both fought ovarian cancer and they are always with me. Like me, they got married later and had their kids later. So our children are close in age. age. Great teachers for me included: Dr. Palmer, Mr. Spence, Mr. Fuller, Mr. Hasbrook, Dr. Shipman, Mr. Katzman, Ms. Howlett and Mrs. Earl. One of my favorite activities was as a majorette...Cheryl, Barbara, Sandy, Terri, & Janice. I learned so much during our PE classes! My Y club Laule'a was especially memorable. I made wonderful friends (Chris, Diane, Pat, Anne Marie, Tracy and more) and worked together to try to make the club grow in respectability and popularity and to earn the title of Club of the Year. I especially remember kidnapping new members and our chicken dinners (breasts and thights) and ice cream social fund raisers. This club, along with Las Moras taught me many leadership skills and the importance of giving back to others through community service. One other special service project was the annual Christmas project to help the Navajos in Oribe, Arizona and our trip in the snow storm to deliver all we collected. Choir exposed me not only to the beauty of music and voice, but Dr. Palmer really taught me how to critically think when approaching new materials and to work hard to obtain a goal. Unfortunately, he couldn't give me talent. I dated and married an AHS 1970 graduate. It was a long courtship, but the shortest marriage on record. Oh to be young, trusting and stupid again! I laughed, I cried, I grew...What more could you ask for from these difficult years. College Bachelors - USC - International Relations. Active in Helenes, Troy Camp, Sword and Shield, and Song Girl. Masters - Georgetown University - Government - just school and work and great people. Additional course work: 2 years of law school at Loyola Law School...wasn't what I expected so I didn't finish it. I also did work in public administration, history and education. I love to travel, as close as I got to being a diplomat. Theatre, gardening and volunteering also keep me sane. I am active with the wonderful AAUW working to promote equity of girls and women. I love a cause. Life has been good to me and I hope the same to you. Fondly, Charlotte
