Steve's Story

First things first: Our 50th reunion is the first weekend in October, 2009. Seachells at mcn dot org. The following is an "old story." I'll update it sometime! Cheers, Steve Life I've certainly not wandered far from the Sequoia tree! I attended San Jose State, where I played baseball four years, joined the Sigma Chi fraternity, met my eventual wife, and left with a degree in Journalism with a Reporting & Editing emphasis (shades of the Sequoia Times!) Dave Schutz hired me at the Redwood City Tribune in June, 1963, and, several months later, asked me to head up to the draft board in San Mateo for a story. Seems the draft lists from San Mateo County were growing, and he wondered "Why?" Well, "Viet Nam" was the answer -- and I found out my draft number was to be called in a month or two! Long story short, I applied for Navy OCS, was accepted, and signed on the day before I was to report to Fort Ord. Off to OCS in Newport, R.I., the day JFK was shot. Four months later I was in Navy CIC school in Georgia -- then off to join the USS Ranger -- which was relieving the USS Constellation after the Gulf of Tonkin incident (nice timing, huh?). Four years and two 9-month cruises later,I left the Navy while the Ranger was in Bremerton, WA. Carol (from Pasadena) and I had married (7-10-65) and we settled in S.F. where I worked for ...Expand for more
a PR/Advertising firm. Joined Hewlett-Packard in PA in 1969, where I worked in PR and HR for 23 years, leaving to start my own consulting business in 1992. I also served on the Cupertino School Board for 12 years during that time. Meanwhile, Carol and I had Robin in '71 and adopted Carrie (born in Korea) in 1976. Robin made us grandparents last year (daughter Emily) and is expecting a second child early next year. They're living in Napa. Carrie is "almost engaged." Carol heads up the sales effort at The Terraces of Los Gatos, a senior retirement community. I continue to consult in corporate communications and am about to renew my arts/crafts interests. I frame mirrors with exotic woods and add some simple, contemporary designs with exotic wood strips and colored mirrors (bronze, gray, copper, etc.) Hard to describe, but they're very interesting. I sell them through art galleries. Met up with Pete Savoia (and Diane Emick!) this past year. Seems both Pete and I play senior tournament softball, and I saw him at a tournament earlier this year. They live in Lincoln Hills. (Old ballplayers never die, they just "steal" away.) Update: We moved to Gualala, CA, in 2006. It's on the NorCal coast between Jenner and Mendocino Well, that's it for me. If you've read this, you obviously know me (Why else?), so drop a line. Cheers, Steve
