Cheri's Story

I graduated from El Cap in 1970 and attended BIOLA College in La Mirada for two years. Married in 1972 and had our daughter in 1973. Instead of finishing my education in nursing at BIOLA, I decided to be a stay at home mom. What a wonderful experience. In 1974 we moved to Bakersfield, had a son in 1980 and I lived there until 2002. My marriage had ended after 25 years so I went to school to get my planned for RN degree. I graduated 4 months after my daughter did (from the same small nursing school) and 4 months after my 50th birthday. Not only had I been out of school for 25 years but I hadn't had very good study habits then and had to develop new and better ones. What an incredible endeavor that was! I was also trying to heal from the devastating and disappointing divorce. I wanted to speak at my graduation and was granted the privilege. I spoke without trepidation and surprised my classmates, my friends and my family! I am very proud of my accomplishments. Shortly after graduation I moved to Salem Oregon to work at Salem Hospital. My children are grown up, daughter 36 and son 29. My parents are here and now my daughter and her family live here too and work at Salem Hospital too! Keep it in the family, right? I have two wonderfully precious grandchildren. Abby is 4 1/2, Alex is 2. I have the awesome privilege of taking care of the kids so my daughter can...Expand for more
work as an operating room nurse. They are a joy! I work at Salem Hospital in the NICU, Newborn Intensive Care Unit. I ABSOLUTELY love my job. It is at times stressful, but how wonderful to see these tiny premie babies return for a visit so we can see how they are growing! Most of the babies we take care of are born way early. 26 weeks is the earliest and most of them weigh a pound or so. They are such precious little people and it is exciting to see their personality developing when they should still be inside their mommy. The most interesting and daring thing I have done in my life was to travel to Romania by myself. I lived there with a Romanian family for 6 weeks and worked as a volunteer for an organization called ROCK. We went to two hospitals for abandoned babies and an orphanage. It was a great experience and I would love to go back........maybe during retirement! While at El Cap I sang in the choir and in Madrigals, I was a Frosh cheerleader and dated Bobby Danzl for three years. There are lots of people I would love to see at the reunion. I hope they are all there! What fun to go back 40 years to visit with people I knew then. I was able to attend my 40th class reunion in July. I had a wonderful time. It was so great to see those I went to high school with. Talk about a trip down Memory lane! I am looking forwad to the next reunion party!
