Cheryl's Story
Life
I have been living in northeast NC since 1994 with Fred, my wonderful husband. (I married a Western Branch boy in 1994). We have actually been together since 1989 & we have 4 kids between us: a 26 year old son named Danny who is a medic in the Army (currently stationed in Hawaii but spent over a year in Iraq); he is married to a beautiful woman named Barbara, they have a beautiful baby girl named Khyra (yep - I'm a Grandma) & they just had another little girl, Isabella (Bella), born January 13, 2008. W have a daughter, Nikki, who is almost 21 years old & currently studying nuclear biochemical warfare for the Army National Guard in Missouri (UPDATE: she graduated & we just found out her unit is going to Afghanistan in August 2008). I don't know how I ended up with 2 kids in the military. I am SO anti-establishment - always have been, always will be. My step-daughter, Brittany (husband's daughter), is getting ready to turn 21. She's a good girl, lives in Portsmouth (Churchland) with her boyfriend. She has a good steady job & plans to go to college. My youngest, Jamie, is the product of my current (& forever marriage). She's 16 going on 25. I knew she would be a handful - rebellious, smart mouth, has trouble with authority - WAIT A MINUTE, THAT'S ME I'M TALKING ABOUT!! My mom always said I would have one just like me - oh well. I turned out ok - she will too.
We have a good life - house, big yard, pool, fence, a dog (my baby) & 2 cats. I never thought I would love country living but I do. It grows on you. I highly recommend it.
Oh yeah - there are a few strange coincidences I would like to share with you. Remember Tommy Copeland? He goes by TC now & he has been working with my husband at Metro Machine Shipyard for a very long time. As ...Expand for more
a matter of fact, Tommy & my husband knew each other before I realized they were working together (he came home from work talking about his buddy, TC) - weird. UPDATE: They don't work together anymore. They both moved on to other jobs after the layoffs, but they still talk on ocassion.
Remember Tommy Miller? He used to live right down the street from me (where I live now) with his wife & a house full of kids (they must have 6 or more). I think he moved back to Portsmouth. He hasn't changed much either - maybe a little stressed (wonder why).
How about Bridget Bostick? She has an older brother named Barry. Her last name is Rivenbark now, she lives right down the street from me & has been living here longer than I have. She is currently the manager of a little grocery store here in the middle of nowhere. It's sad to say but I don't really remember much about her from high school (we didn't hang out), but she looks exactly the same.
College
I decided to go back to school & get a degree after moving to NC. In my 30's with 3 young kids at home, I drove back & forth to Greenville, NC (East Carolina University) for 3 years (went to COA in Elizabeth City for a year, then transferred). I graduated with honors & got a degree in Political Science. What can I do with that degree, you might ask? I'm still trying to get that long sought after law degree. I get really ticked off at Washington politics though - does that count? Seriously, I have every intention of finishing my education.
By the way, Greenville is a 90 minute drive one way from my house. So, if any of you out there want to go back to school but think you can't, think again. It's hard, but it's worth it. If an old 'head' like me can do it & actually make good grades, anybody can do it.
