Cheryl's Story
Two days after graduation, moved to DC. Worked as a secretary at an insurance company until I was 18. Then worked for Farm Credit Administration. After 9 years, left to serve as office manager for former head of FCA, where I met my future husband. Married in 1977. No children. Now I'm retired, but my husband still doing consulting work for small farmers and cooperatives. Still have brother and family living in Charleston.
I had a pretty rough childhood. My dad died when I was four. My mother married a violent alcoholic, so I pretty much retreated into myself. Real quiet and mousy in school. I was ...Expand for more
very ashamed and could never really have friends to my house. We moved frequently because every weekend was very violent, the police would come, and eventually we'd be asked to leave.
So...as soon as I graduated, I left and made a better life for myself. I was lucky enough to meet a wonderful man, and we'll celebrate our 34th anniversary in September.
I missed out on so much in high scool, but I had a wonderful teacher, Mrs. Norman, who probably saved my life. She really helped me feel like I was worth something, unlike how I was treated at home. God bless her and all those who helped me along the way.
