Cheryl's Story

Recent bio from MD Anderson Cancer Center, but beware, this reads like the Christmas letter from hell... Cheryl Lyn Walker, Ph.D., is the Ruth and Walter Sterling Professor of Carcinogenesis in the Department of Carcinogenesis. Her laboratory is based at the Science Park Research Division, which is located inside Buescher State Park in Smithville, TX. While not a native Texan, Cheryl ¿got here as quick as she could¿, arriving in Texas at the age of 2 when her family relocated from Oregon. She grew up in the beautiful Oak Cliff neighborhood of Dallas until obtaining her B.A. from the University of Colorado. After a brief stint in the workplace, Cheryl focused on earning a Ph.D. in Cell Biology from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School. Along the way she met her husband Mike and had the first of their two children, Ashley. Postdoctoral training took her to North Carolina, where she was a Staff Fellow at NIEHS. In anticipation of having another child, Cheryl help found an on-site day care center at NIEHS, ¿First Environments¿, in time for the birth of her second child Christopher. First Environments continues to provide outstanding day-care to NIEHS and EPA employees in the Research Triangle Park, and Cheryl is as proud of this accomplishment as any of those in the scientific arena. After acquiring independence as a principal investigator at the CIIT Centers for Health Research, she was recruited to MD Anderson Cancer Center and back to Texas, which still felt like home to her family. Since joining MD Anderson, Cheryl has held appointments from the Department of Health and Human Services to the Board of Scientific Councilors of the N...Expand for more
ational Toxicology Program, and is a former Chair of the Environmental Genomics and Carcinogenesis Panel for the Congressionally-mandated US-Japan Cooperative Medical Exchange Program. She is also a former member of the Board of Scientific Councilors of the National Cancer Institute and the National Academy of Sciences Committee on Emerging Issues and Data on Environmental Contaminants. She is a member of the International Scientific Advisory Board for the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance, having previously served as Chair, and the Scientific Advisory Board for the LAM Foundation. Cheryl has been very active in the Society of Toxicology, and is currently President of this 6500-member society. She is also active in the American Association for Cancer Research, where she has held many elected and appointed positions, including President of Women in Cancer Research. Her research focuses on molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis, exploring pathways responsible for the development of cancers of the male genitourinary tract (kidney and prostate) and female reproductive tract (uterus) with the goal of utilizing this information to develop new targeted therapies for these diseases. She has published over 100 peer-reviewed articles in high-impact journals such as Science, Molecular Cell, Nature Cell Biology and PNAS. She has served on and/or chaired numerous study sections for the NIH, DOD, State of California and the American Cancer Society. Cheryl has trained >25 graduate student and post-doctoral fellows since joining MD Anderson and currently supports a research lab of ~10 individuals with funding from the NIH, PKD Foundation, LAM Foundation and the TS Alliance.
