Cheryl's Story

Life I am a published writer/poet/photojournalist who has published numerous books and chapbooks. My latest book, "Haiku For You: With Some One Room School House History," is a children's book for kids of all ages. It has been available now for a few months and is captivating readers. My fine art photography fully illustrate this book, as well as some historic photographs from the 1800's which showcases one room school houses from that era. My Haiku is inspiring, and, educational at the same time. Prior to that, "Cheryl's Musings: A Day In The Life Of An Award Winning Poet & Photographer" was released in September of 2008. It is a slice of life vignette with my busy career for about a year and a half. Inside, there are some award winning photos of mine, and, at the end, there is a mini-writing guide to inspire the muse and artist in all of us. It is a great book! Of course my first book, "Woman Reclining was published over three years ago, and, is still quite popular. "Woman Reclining II" will be available later this year. "Woman Reclining is a book of epic and narrative poetry, with a smattering of haiku, "Woman Reclining", is popular amongst those who love to read literary art. My best selling chapbook is titled, "Haiku For You", a children's workbook which teaches youngsters and those young at heart the art of writing some haiku. As of this time I only have a few copies left! I've sold this publication to fellow authors, educators, parents, and grandparents. You can contact me if you'd like to purchase any of my published work, and, if you plug in the title, "Woman Reclining", you'll see my webpage through Outskirts Press. You'll also see mention of my two latest books there too, and, some of the stores that carry my books. The year of 2008 was a very busy one for this author. I collected numerous awards, inclusive of the Bronze Medal through the 2008 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition. In addition to that, I won another cash award for a Haiku through the PAN competition in Milford, Michigan. Additionally, I won an award for a historical fiction story for children through the Lowell Council For The Arts. This story will be in book form, and, "The Cornstalks Are Whispering" will be released in a few months. Also, as a freelance writer and award winning photographer, I've netted other publication endeavors for my work, and, had my first solo exhibit of my fine art photography late in 2008 and early into 2009. I will be putting together another exhibit too. In 2007, I was notified of my win through the 76th Writer's Digest Writing Competition. I've worked hard all of my life to produce excellent prose in poetic form, and other styles. I believe that poetry is something that everyone should appreciate, and learn from too! I'll be promoting this award as it is significant to my work, and my future accomplishments. My name is listed with the other winners in the bo...Expand for more
ok that was published in 2007. I plan on crafting press releases to let everyone know about it. I've written for many Metro Detroit Newspapers inclusive of the Detroit Free Press. Some of my writing credentials include poetry, articles, and photographs for "The Ledger" in Plymouth Michigan. I helped this publication gain readership in it's infancy stage. The first cover was of Miss Michigan whom I had originally interviewed briefly for the Detroit Free Press. The second story that I wrote regarding her life was enjoyable. When she read my story, she e-mailed me and told me on the telephone that it was the best article written about her. Anytime I interview an individual I try to capture the essence of his/her life, and then pass that on to the reader in an interesting format. In 2006, my debut column will hit the newstands with my award winning poem "Woman Reclining" alongside my musings. I received my first place check for $500 my poem. I also had the distinct honor of having four of my Haiku on display in Lowell Michigan for six weeks. The curators of the show were wonderful to me, and invited me back to submit a writing portfolio for the next exhibit which was titled,"Innerscapes". My artwork of "Lawrence", and my poem, "A Haunted Soul" juried into this fine exhibit. It was nice to exhibit my work there two years in a row. For my first show in Lowell, only 32 artists were chosen for this exhibit, and over 100 artists applied to it. From reading the other biographies and resumes, most of the participants were highly educated like myself, and have a background in teaching, and other professional fields. I had a few individuals come up to me and thank me for taking part in the exhibit as it was a good two hour drive from my home. I fell in love with Lowell, as it reminded me of Lowell, Mass. where I lived for a couple of years. I also have a blog site that is read, and the focus of it relates to writing and my poetic accomplishments. As an editor I work with my creative writing students and fellow poets. As a college instructor (professor) I have taught at the community college level as well as the university level. I have designed courses for Schoolcraft college in Livonia Michigan. I have developed different creative writing classes and poetry courses as well. I have won awards for my work and have an established following at the college level as well as through community education classes in Westland. I also served in the United States Army, Army Reserve, and Army National Guard. I believe that the military helped me to follow my dreams. I have two Associate of Science Degrees, A Bachelor of Science Degree, and a Master's of Arts from the University of Michigan. I've earned numerous certificates and other diploma's as well. In July 2013, time Travelers: Suzanne's Journey, a national novel month winner, became a published novella, and is already popular with new readers!!
